Pine Forest Recreation Area

There are three popular recreation sites within the Pine Forest Recreation Area. Blue Lakes, Onion Reservoir, and Knott Creek Reservoir. All three have superb scenery, excellent fishing, hunting, wildlife viewing, primitive camping, mountain biking, and opportunities for photography exist at every turn. This is a remote area, with dirt roads. Bring extra food and water. Four-wheel drive vehicles are advised. The roads are passable only in dry weather.

Water Canyon

This secluded canyon is located within 20 minutes south of Winnemucca, and offers picnicking, birdwatching and camping. The year-round stream provides a lush riparian environment.

11. Black Rock Desert

Spectacular scenic opportunities surround the vast white playa that remains from the now dry ancient Lake Lahontan. Elevations vary from 4,800 feet to 8,400 feet. Primitive camping and opportunities for solitude are present. A variety of interesting geologic features dominate the landscape. Check with locals at the town of Gerlach for current conditions of the playa. It is impassable during any inclement weather.

High Rock Canyon

The High Rock Canyon was once part of the alternate route to the Oregon Trail and subsequently became the Applegate-Lassen Trail in 1849; this portion of the California National Historic Trail is considered one of the most historic canyon routes in the West. Scenic steep canyon walls of basaltic flows have been carved over centuries of wind and water. Access is limited to high clearance four-wheel drive vehicles and the road can be treacherous if visitors are not prepared for back country travel. The canyon is closed February 1 to April 15.
