Information prepared by the BLM

Dumont Dunes Off-Highway Vehicle Area is an exciting and remote area for the off-highway vehicle user. The area is bordered by steep volcanic hills and the slowly running Amargosa River, and is recognized from a distance by the tall white sand dunes. The elevation at the river is about 700 feet, up to about 1200 feet at the top of Competition Hill- the tallest of the dunes. Besides the remote nature of the area, another attraction is the historic Tonapah and tidewater Rail Road that runs along the eastern boundary of the riding area. Vegetation consists of creosote scrub, some annual grasses and wild flowers. The low elevation in the area makes for warm to extremely hot conditions. The warm weather in the area makes for fantastic early spring wildflower displays away from the dunes.

Access:

The riding area is south of the Amargosa River and east of State Route 127, about 31 miles north of Baker (CA). There are two ways of getting to the dunes. The Little Dunes staging and camping area is directly off of SR 127, for immediate staging. About a mile further north on SR 127 is a dirt road, Dumont Road, which follows and crosses the river, to get to the main field of large dunes.

Activities:

Most of the area visitors ride motorcycles or ATVs, drive sand rails or tour the area in four-wheel drive vehicles. The easily accessed areas off Dumont Road are used extensively for OHV and sand rail staging and play. Due to the remoteness of the area, there have been few requests for competitive event permits, leaving this area exclusively for casual riders. There are many opportunities for hiking, rock scrambling, rock hounding, and plant, bird and wildlife watching in the hills away from the dunes. NOTE: The Kingston Wilderness Area and Area of Critical Environmental Concern border the riding area to the north. These areas are closed to motor vehicles as posted. Travel outside the riding area to the south and east is only on designated routes with street legal vehicles. Extremes of heat and cold are likely in this area! Rescue in the area is not immediate!
