If you've seen my old CB set up [see my old setup here] you know I used to have my CB mounted neatly under my CD player, in the dash. It was a nice setup! Very clean. My only complaint was the bottom firing speaker, firing right into the floor. We usually had the volume all the way up, to hear was was being said.
Well my Ultra 19 bit the dust, and my Alpine CD player bit the dust. I mounted the new stereo significantly different than the old one, and mounting the CB under it was no longer an option. I struggled with where to mount the CB for a long time, the whole while being frustrated that I had a sunroof preventing me from roof mounting it.
Then I finally came up with a way that I could still mount it on the roof, and still be able to pop the sunroof up for ventilation. I bought some aluminum plate, and cut and shaped it to meet my needs. I rarely take the sun sheild off of the glass anyway, so it did not bother me that this design would prevent me from conveniently removing the sheild.
Once the aluminum plate was in place I mounted the replacement CB, a Cobra 19 DX II (with Cobra power mic) to it. Now it was time to figure out wiring...
I wanted the setup to look as 'clean' as possible, so running the wires up the pillar, and under the headliner was the only option for me. I removed the plastic decoration piece that covered the pillar and removed the baffels on the back side of it. This left me with more than enough room to run the necessary wires. (+12V, ground, antenna coax, and PA wires) I neatly zip tied them all together to keep them were I wanted them, and eliminate possible rattles.
By cutting a slot out of the sun roof trim I was able to run all the wires from behind the headliner to the sunroof area. Again I neatly zip tied the wires to keep them in place, and hopefully not visible. I removed the glass to give you an idea of what it looks like from the top. Inside the cab the wires are noticable only if you're looking for them. When the mic is not in place there are no obstructions in the rear view mirror.
This is without a doubt the best CB mounting I've never had in any of my vehicles. The bottom firing speaker is GREAT with the CB on the roof. Turning the volume up to 1/4 up is nearly unbearable... where we used to turn it all the way up for normal listening.
