TURBO CITY'S   "ROCK-IT SIDEBARS"
When you want to add a little more protection to your rocker panels

Most fourwheeler's will tell you that adding protection to your rocker panels is a cheap way to guard against expensive repairs to your vulnerable rocker panels.  Not long ago I installed a set of Off-Your Rocker Panels on my 1991 YJ but felt that I needed a little more protectionTURBO1A.jpg (10299 bytes) from those side impact hits that seem to cause a lot of damage to the rocker panels.

There are several different types of rocker panel protection on the market these days, from thin aluminum diamond plate to heavy steel tubular "nerf" type bars.  The thin aluminum diamond plate panels don't offer much protection and the tubular "nerf" style bars compromise ground clearance.  I was looking for a product that would offer superb side impact protection and minimize the loss of ground clearance often associated with "nerf" style bars.  I also wanted an accessible step to help me climb into my lifted Jeep.

I contacted Turbo City and had them send me a pair of their new "ROCK-IT SIDEBARS".

The Sidebars are constructed of 3/16-inch by 2 x 4- inch rectangular tubing for the main cross bar, and 2 x 3-inch rectangular tubing for the support bars.  The Sidebars mount to the frame rail using pre-drilled mounting brackets welded to the support bars.  The center mount utilizes the existing center body mount bracket for support.  These bars come factory powdercoated and a diamond plate tread piece. Other step options are Black Diamond Plate or Black Grit. The kit comes with instructions and 10 "Nutserts" screws and washers.

INSTALLATION:

1.  Remove the center body mount bolt and position the Sidebar against the frame rail.  The middle Sidebar support flange goes underneath the center body mount bracket.

2.  Support the Sidebar, making sure the bar is level ( it may be helpful to use a Hi-Lift jack or have a friend support the bar).

3. With the Sidebar in place, mark the locations of the bolt holes on the frame rails. To position the Sidebars so they are level with the rocker panel, measure from the top of the Sidebar to the bottom of the rocker panel on each end of the Sidebar.  Install the center body mount bolt with the Sidebar in position and tightened the bolt to hold the Sidebar in position while marking the bolt holes.

4.  Set the parking brake, jack up the rear of the vehicle and remove the rear tire.  This will allow more room to work on the rear mounting bracket.  You may want to drill a pilot hole through the frame rail and/or spring hanger at each location. Note that only the top front and bottom hole are used on the front bracket.  Drill each bolt hole location using an 11/32-in drill bit.

5. Install the front and rear bracket bolts and tighten. Tighten the center body mount bolt at this time.

6.  Install the rear wheel and you're done!

IMPRESSIONS:

Installing the Sidebars was fairly straightforward.  I deviated somewhat from the instructions in that I installed the Sidebars without removing them from the Jeep once the holes were marked.  This was easy to do if you take the rear wheel off to allow more working space.  The kit comes with only 10 Nutserts, but the mounting brackets have 12 total holes.  The top rear bolt-hole on the front bracket is not used as there is not enough room to get a wrench between the Sidebar and the bottom of the body tub.

TURBO7A.jpg (32668 bytes)The ROCK-IT Sidebars TURBO8A.jpg (4915 bytes)will provide another level of security for those looking to add some protection to your rocker panels.  These Sidebars are sturdy, well constructed and also provide a nice step when getting into and out of a lifted Jeep. The aluminum step tread offers a non-slip surface when standing on the Sidebar.  The low profile design and clean lines of these bars compliment the Jeep well while also providing minimal loss of ground clearance.  The tough powdercoating should stand up to years of abuse.  The Sidebars stick out only as far as your fender flares and offer exceptional protection to your vulnerable rocker panel.  These Sidebars are available for most Jeep YJ, CJ and XJ applications.
