George Reiswig here...I'll be the "reporter on the scene" for the trip. Fred and Jane Fitzgearld will be driving up to meet us later, after he can get off work. The Reiswig departure is eminent, and there have been enough things happening that maybe the diary should start now. Why not?

Sunday, July 14 - Two days to departure. Our shakedown cruise revealed some needed changes, so we bumped the Reiswig's departure date back by a day: Krista's bed needed the sides raised, so that she wouldn't fall out. Her bed is suspended about 20" above George and Angela's bed, and she's enough of a climber at 17 months that she nearly came out during the night. Grog Mog is performing well, but some suspension tweaks were in order following the last minute devolution from air suspension back to coils with lift blocks. Cut fenders out of a piece of plastic and installed them on the front, so that we'll be legal on the highways and won't kick up too much junk on other cars. Fluid levels checked. Oil and filters changed.

On our shakedown trip, we had taken the CB antenna's magnetic mount down from the roof, sticking it to the rear of the cab. A tree branch managed to find part of the mount sticking up enough to catch, and voila! The antenna ended up dangling from the cable, dragging in the dirt, for an unknown period of time. Murphy's law applied itself: the cable did not break a conductor, causing an open circuit. Instead, the two conductors shorted out, and the excellent Cobra CB no longer transmits. That means a trip to the store for a new CB, time to install it, and a new cable. Oh, and a better system for stowing the cable on the trail. Cables make a poor leash for a heavy magnet mount.

Said goodbye to the dog today...125 pounds of dog will be staying on 100 acres of farm for the trip, since he doesn't travel well. My main concern is that he may not want to come back to our small yard when we get back.

Furious last-minute preparations continue. We hope that all the bad things are happening BEFORE the trip starts, so that nothing will go wrong during it.
