TOY: Toyota 22RE Tune-up

Hello all,
I really need some advice. I'm preparing to take my
22RE Hilux up to Telico for a couple of days riding in
the mountians. Before making the 300+ mile hike and
the trial ride I wanted to address a few things:

Spark Plugs
Fluids
Brakes
Drive Line

My other areas I'm addressing is a adjustment of the
valves and the replacement of the exhaust system. I'm
proud to say the bone stock system has lasted
un-harmed since 92'. I have not seen one Toyota that
was 5 years or older that didn't leak and have a sad
sick sound coming from it. Well mine just gave out
(13 years later), and I wanted to replace the whole
system but was advised not to go back with a 2.5" line
and flowmaster muffler due to back pressure issues
robbing the the little engine of presious HP's. What
am I to do? I have been doing my homework and I was
counting on this maybe adding a little. I want to
make the little 4 banger breath and run better. Any
suggestions?

Hi Duck,
My 1984 Toyota 4Runner "Bouncing-Betty" was originally a 22R Carbureted engine
with over 364,000 miles on the 4 cylinder engine. now with a Toyota 3.0 liter,
V-6 engine powering her.
the above link takes to the page describing the engine swap.

On your 22RE, fuel injected 4 cylinder engine Congratulations with the
longevity of her engine!
Is the exhaust rusting through? You may want to consider a free-flowing air
filter, depending upon the type of driving your truck will see.

I would Not recommend a free-flowing (like K&N) if you primarily drive in
heavily sandy/dusty areas. The fine particles would get into your engine!

Yes, I would get the valves adjusted and perform the tune-up you mentioned.
Many times here in North Alabama replacement OEM exhaust systems are available
at the bone-yard for a fraction of the new or replacement systems.
(just an idea)

Have you recently replaced the fuel filter? That would also help with the
engine performance if it has been a long time since it was replaced.
There is a pre-screen (sock) on the intake to the FP in the fuel tank.

I have seen these pre-screen socks get covered up in goo over the years
causing a decrease in fuel flow.

Also check the entrance to the intake. It commonly gets a build-up of goo in
the throat.
Hope this helps.
Best Regards,

I just changed the fuel filter this week. Any
recomendations on exhuast types to try other than
stock? I did not know about the sock. How about
injector cleaning? Is this expensive?
