TOY: 4runner Automatic shift problems

I have a 91 toyota 4runner/surf. It is 4wheel drive
and has been having some problems shifting into the
proper gears. It does not do this all the time.
Sometime while at 60 mph it will lose power and will
not shift into the correct passing gear even when you
floor it. Other times when cold it will not shift
into correct gear? Is my transmission trash? I just
bought it and I have not had a chance to drive it down
the high way due to rebuilding it from a wreck. All
of this information was provided from the privious
owner. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Duck

Hi Brian,
Is the Automatic Transmission Fluid level up to the proper level?
Something as simple as adding to the ATF until it is on the full mark on the
ATF dipstick can make a world of difference.
That would be my first thing to try.

Next...
Have you tried changing the ATF and replacing the automatic transmission filter?

If you bought from a dealer -
I would take it back to their service department.

If you bought from an individual then try the ATF and filter change that might
help. Hope this helps.
Best Regards,

The shifting of your transmission is controlled electronically.
After very roughly 150,000 miles the electronic shift control.
solenoids malfunction / stop working causing bizzarre shifting
behavior or no shifting. Owners then wrongly assume their
transmission is worn out.

The solenoids are fairly costly, but people I know who have
replaced them say "it's almost as easy as changing the transmission
fluid."
