I'm pretty sure it was 1986 for the North American
models.

You can use IFS calipers which were from 86 and on.
However, V6 Calipers have larger pistons and are 88 and on. So, go with
the V6 calipers from 88 on. Eventually, the 4 cylinder calipers were
upgraded to the V6 calipers, but I am not sure what year that happened.

It was '86 because the reason for switching to IFS was because the V6 wouldn't
fit with the solid axle.

The 90 V6 calipers I bought have 3 cooling funs the stick up on the top
and come within 1/8th inch of the wheel. Were these cooling fins on the
86 calipers?
Also the brake pads are longer on the 90s calipers than my oringinal 81
calipers. So are the 86 pads the same size as the 81?

your best bet is to upgrade to v6 4runner calipers and rotors just trim a
little off the backing plate. I used rotors and calipers from a 96 4runner

Well, after all the problems of diagnosing my engine problems I finally just
bought a new 22RE to put in. I have one question though. The install
manual that came with tne new motor says to prime the oil pump and engine
before turning the engine over. I've always used a drill in the distributor
shaft to accomplish this but the manual says not to do it that way. The
only other way (that I see) is to put a vacuum pump where the oil pressure
sending unit goes and hand-pump it that way. Is this the right way or is
there another way (better way) to do it. I'm beginning the project in the
morning so I'm going to need some quick answers.
Thanks in advance!
