TOY: What kind of micrometer is needed for Diff setup.

I set up a few differentials in High school and I've done mine be
eyeball before but now I have all new gears and bearings to put in and
I'd like to get it right. What range of micrometer do I need for this
work? I have one but it seems to be way too sensitive. The needle
deflects the whole dial no matter what I do.

Backlash is in the 0.008" range, so find a micrometer
that's graded at 0.001" or 0.0005". A cheap Sears or
Harbor Freight one ($30) will do the job.
