Re: TOY: Re: comparing '86-'88 models
Agreed. Especially about tacoma being less of a truck than previous.
I will, however, nominate the 80's Nissan 2.4 liter (equivalent of the
22R, but with better timing chain system) for the best engine ever made
award. Most shops don't know much about them because they never needed
anything. Incredible engineering, metal quality and precision assembly.
Last time I saw one in the junkyard with 80 K on it, I asked the guy what it
was worth. He said nothing, nobody ever replaces them.
The 22REs - I've often heard of them being overhauled. Not the Nissan
engine. 22R is still great though!

What about the Tacoma 4 cyl? No timing chain or other problems
either. Some guys already have over 400K miles on them.
The 22R will last 600K if well maintained, just like most other Toyota
engines will. But the timing chain will need replacement at between
400-500K miles even in the best maintained engines.
I think what you are really saying is that the 80's Nissan 2.4 liter
stands up to maintenance neglect better than the 22R.
That's probably true, but the longevity of a well maintained
Nissan 2.4 liter is probably not any better than a well maintained
22R. Both engines are about twice as durable as any American truck
4 cylinder engine.
