TOY: comparing '86-'88 models

Hi,

I'm new to the list. I used to own an '86 with the
22RTE, but the turbo was out and i didn't have the
money or know-how at the time to deal with it and
ended up selling her. Now i've finally got the cash to
get another truck. Was looking at the early years
because i love that body style, but after having a
standard cab already i'm positive i want an extracab
(even though it's only like an extra two inches, they
be a mighty nice two inches to have). Plus EFI is
easier. And I don't have any real need for the solid
front.

So point of all this is I'm shopping models from
'86-'88, and am wondering if anyone could point me
toward some resources for more information on these
model years. Basically I'm trying to figure out what
the differences were, how many were made of each, any
weak points on each model, etc. If it matters, i'm
only concerned with the 22re models (no 6 cyl.).

Any suggestions would be much appreciate!
Thanks,
Bryan
Calif.

Call 1-800-GOTOYOTA Believe it or not folks, they actually have a technical
division that "might" answer your questions, or at least refer you to
someone at Toyota who can answer it for you.

I've got a 93 Pick-Up with a 22re 4 banger FI in it, and I've got all kinds
of info from these folks. I never bombard these folks with a million
questions, but I can assure you, they are sleepers waiting for the phone to
wring. So, don't abuse the priviledge, and feel them out before you ask a
whole bunch of questions or call them back every now and them with
specifics. My computer manufacturer charges 13 bucks an hour to tell me how
to replace a fuse or my internal battery, and I sure hope Toyoto continues
to charge nothing, for their service!

As an example. I don't have any contact with my Toyota dealer, because they
are a 6.5 hour round trip for me. I got the torque settings for several
components from these people, and even found out something that I might like
to pass on, for those who don't know.

Its about the wheels on Toyota trucks. All 4 cyls have 15X6 wheels with six
spokes (15 wide, 6 inch deep) and all 6 cycls have 15X7 with six spokes.
Nice to know when you look for rims, or tires and want to maintain factory
specs! Also, with the black spare steel wheels? They are 15X6 (I think)
for 6 cyls and the silver 15X5 are for 4 cyls. Tire question? Why would
they put a 15X5 wheel on a pick-up for a spare tire, when most all traction
tires are only designed for 6 and 7 inch wheels? (Read the specs on the
tires you buy, there is all kinds of interesting stuff on them, including
the tread depth. I can usually figure out how long a tire will last me in
years, based on the tread depth and my mileage per year!) I've got a
passenger tire on my spare wheel, because of this! But, all tires are still
the same size, diameter, etc.

Also, I use my Chilton's for all my repairs, and have never had any problems
working on my truck, myself. I am just a do-it-your selfer, but I am not
afraid to pull out my breaker bar or put a rubber mallet to a wrench.

Hope I was able to pass on some info. If I am wrong about something, sorry,
always check stuff out yourself. And, if so, then I would appreciate
knowing that someone gave me bad info.

Happy Holidays, one and all!

Second thought. Let's be nice to each other on this site, folks. There was
some really inappropriate comments made this week by someone who thinks
people who try to save money are "poor' and members of racial minorities!
I'm a disabled senior-citizen on a fixed income, and I micromanage my truck
and its maintenance and repair, as well as all my finances. My truck runs
like they day I drove it off the lot with 6 miles on it (now 108,000) and
I've saved boo-koo bucks by doing 99% of everything by myself!

Have a great day, and drive careful!
