New Toyota bearings and seals installed at the dealership by a guy who
knew his stuff (V6 housing) = $50 dollars. I've done it twice, 50 bucks
both times. If you install the gears yourself and have them do the
backlash and all that, I wouldn't think it would be that much. Just a
thought.

Lots of reading on this and other topics in the Toyota
bible at Pirate4x4
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=173918
Generally, toys had 4.10, 4.38, 4.56 or some real rare
4.88 stock from the factory. So you may be able to
find those at a local or internet junkyard and just
get the 3rd to swap in (need both front and rear)
Most people with 4.88's are running aftermarket and
usually it is recomended to have professionally done
(I did my own) If you bring the third into the shop
it will be $125 and up for labor only for each 3rd.

Say what? My car has 193K miles on it and still looks and runs great.
I have an 80 2wd Toy in storage with 400K+ on it and it would run if it
weren't for the body cancer and some vandalism.
180K is nothing for a Jap motor. If I only wanted a motor to last that
long, I'd just buy a Ford.

Knock is ignition , the proper fix is retard ignition .
Else stop using 40 octane mexican gas , clean combustion chamber
of the 1/2" long overhanging particle of carbon , or turn of
your glow plugs ! Every knock i've every had was fix'd by retard .
Except turbo , where too much boost will cause auto ignition .
Why would anyone drive an engine w/ 180K miles ? You're goin
to tell me your poor .
BTW Any inventors out there ? I have a clutch invent that makes
your clutch a 5 lb pull . It opposes the diaph' spring with an
even stiffer spring , then a mechanisn has only to pull 5 lbs to engage
clutch , but to pull the release bearing away from clucth needs lot's
of power , but that where my inventions comes in .
Hand operated clutch !
Others are a straight shaft w/o U joints on front prop' shaft ( IFS )
and it also has a shiftable one way cluct to nix binding in turns .

werty@swissinfo.org sounds like he's a Ford man so that's
all he knows. And then he has the gall to say he knows
how to "improve" the Toyota motors! What a laugh!

I have 92 4X4 extended cab that had 236,000 plus on it! Just did engine
swap two weeks ago. I was the second owner got in 94 with 29,000 miles on
it.
Never had valve job still had original water pump and alternator it would
have lasted longer but the 100 mile commute mon - fri @75-80 mph paid it
toll on the timing chain tensioner. Anyway runs great now still gives the
chevy guys a run for their money at the sand pits.
