> Slipping, you sure it's not the clutch?....

It might be the clutch discs. The Master rebuild kit includes "Paper
gaskets, rubber lip seals, O rings, pan gasket, metal clad seals, sealing
ring kit (metal or teflon sealing rings depending on unit) friction clutch
plates and steel clutch plates."

>From what one "transmission guy" here says, he thinks I wasted my money on
the low/reverse sprag, but it was only $45. If he opened up the trans and
found I needed it, it would be another three weeks of renting a car while I
wait for a part, so $45 seemed really cheap.

Hey Mike!

This list used to be quite busy but has quited down alot.
You might want to try the forums at 4x4wire too.

Also I think alot of people that were here went to the pirate forums.
http://www.pirate4x4.com/welcome1.html

There is a bunch of good info there too. check it out.

I remember seeing a page where some rebuilt a toy 4x4 tranny. I'll try to
find it again.

Nothing between the 4.88 and the 4.10? Is this a shad
tree job so to speak or is professional help advised?

I run 5.29's and 33's which are a little overgeared (the engine spins
faster for a given road speed than stock), so the 4.88's will be a
little overgeared for a 32, which is not a bad thing if you like to be
able to pass people on the highway, though your speedo will read a bit
high. There are 4.56's available as well, most people I know with gears
run either 4.88 or 5.29.

If you have not set gears up before, pay a pro. I bought gears and
tools, set them up twice (Wrong both times), and ultimately ruined the
rear set, so I got to buy another set and pay a friend to install them
too. I'd have ultimately paid less if I had just paid the pros the first
time.

Randy's Ring & Pinion here in Western Washington is among the best there
are out there, but I am sure that there is a competent local shop near
you as well. Ask someone who drives a Toy with gears where they got
there work done.

The front end (assuming IFS) is a little trickier than the rear, and
both must be done at the same time assuming you want to retain the
4-wheel drive. I highly recommend installing a locking differential in
the rear, though mine is a little coarse on the street, the truck is
much more capable off-road now.

Lots of reading on this and other topics in the Toyota
bible at Pirate4x4
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=173918

Generally, toys had 4.10, 4.38, 4.56 or some real rare
4.88 stock from the factory. So you may be able to
find those at a local or internet junkyard and just
get the 3rd to swap in (need both front and rear)
Most people with 4.88's are running aftermarket and
usually it is recomended to have professionally done
(I did my own) If you bring the third into the shop
it will be $125 and up for labor only for each 3rd.
