TOY: Problems

I completed the swap 88 engine in to a 89 truck. Every
thing went fine, no warning lights and it ran well. I
decided to drive it around the hunting area still all
went well. On the way home it sputterd a couple of
times then died. It will start up then die again. I
have no power to the fuel pump now. I tempory wired
the fuel pump to run while my wife tried to start it.
Still started then died right afterwards. The relay
under the hood works. Now what should I check for?

Thanks

Ray

Have 2000 Toy 4X4 , i have 2 relays in series ( fuel pump and circuit

operating relay ) either will ruin your whole day if open .

  Hope this helps .

BTW the rack/pinion steering cyl on 2000 ( '96 up ?) will need

  replacing every 30k miles.

Toyota didn't figure how much stress there is on it ! The older steering

 gear is far stronger .

What do you mean temp wire to the fuel pump? Did you
run a hot lead from the battery and it still died? If
so you eliminated the fuel pump relay and definately
would have power to the pump so the problem is either
the pump or the fuel filter. Since you swaped in a
motor, you did run the return line from the pressure
regulater to the tank to bleed off excess pressure
didn't you?

If what I described above is NOT what you meant, and
you don't have power to the pump I would suspect the
fuel pump relay. If the relay is faulty I am
surprized you can even start it ... it tends to work
fine or not work at all. In any case on an '85 the
relay lives up behind the glove box. I forget the
wire colors. You can pull the relay box off the
innards and on mine heavily dousing it in wd-40 got it
working again after rain water from having no
windshield had rusted up the moving parts.

I think I am a little confused...

If you run a hotwire from the battery to the pump and you still aren't
getting fuel pressure then your pump is bad or the pump housing that
drops into the tank is fubared.

You should be able to hear the pump when you wire it up. It is
definitely loud enough to hear if you are next to the gas tank.

It sounds like you are saying you bypassed the relays but have no
voltage - I am not sure how you bypassed if you don't have any voltage
but just run a wire from the battery - 12 volts and you should hear it
humming, if not - check the connections on the housing. If they look
fine, might as well drop the tank, cause you'll be replacing the housing
or the fuel pump.

If you had a jumper from the battery and had no
voltage you gotta have a bad ground then.

How are you determining that you have no voltage?
Even with a bad ground if you tested with a VOM it
would show voltage since it would ground through the
VOM lead?

Ok, Let me start over. Truck ran. Then sputtered and
died truck will start but not keep running. Found 0V
to pump. Ran hot from battery pump ran but truck did
not after start up. Switch mass air flow relays. Still
did not run. Checked the EFI relay it is good. Still
nothing. After installed different mass air flow now
it will not even start. Put orginal mass air flow back
on. Still will not even start. What could be next?

Got a wiring diagram? Time to get one!

A friend's Isuzu was set up so if no oil pressure signal, fuel pump shut
off. For run mode only. Start mode allowed no pressure for a minute. I
think you are seeing a similar thing. Start mode bypasses something that
run mode needs. If not oil pressure then something else.

I've been wondering if we lost reliability with the R&P. But 30K?

How did you come to that conclusion? Certainly not in the service schedule?
Mine's got 150K on it. I bet most people are getting that easy. SHOULD
last 300K.

I know it will be extra spendy/not rebuildable compared to the old style
when it is replaced.
