TOY: grit in engine
I brought in my car for an oil-change and battery replacement (no time to
do it myself lately, pretty bad sign I know). So this guy takes out my K&N
air-filter and comes over to tell me that it is dirty and needs to be
replaced. I tell him it's a K&N and that I'll take care of the cleaning it
later myself.
I come home and think about it for a while, so I better check the
air-filter. This guy put it in up-side down.... I'm pissed, but its too
late now.
Question: what is the best way of taking care of the crud and stuff that
could have entered my engine block?
Replace all engine fluids?
It's the Tacoma 2.7L 4 cyl. I drove about 30min worth with it upside down.
Any advise will be greatly appreciated,
Rik

I am a new toyota forerunner owner, and neophyte to a lot of mechanical work.
I have been driving rigs though for over 40 years, and can't in my opinion imagine you did any serious damage to the internal combustion chambers of the engine.
But that's just my opinion and probably would not get me a cup of coffee up town.

Just to let everybody know of a recent problem I experienced with my '97
regarding the head gaskets.
I took a trip to Florida from Connecticut and upon arriving and while
following a family member, I experienced an over-heating condition.
Bottom line is that the head gasket(s) had failed.
This truck had been certified as having been past the head gasket problem of
earlier T's based on the VIN but it happened anyway at 119,000 miles.
Bottom line cost-wise was somewhat north of $3000.00, but that included a
new radiator, coolant, valve job, refurbished heads, and sundry other parts
necessary to bring the cooling system in line with the refurbished heads. Labor
alone was 20 hours at $75.00/hour.
Just thought I should pass this info along to the rest of you as the job was
way beyond my expertise and I consider myself fortunate that, if it had to
happen, I was near family.
I mean, it could have happened 500 miles north and out in the
boonies.............

Sorry about the HG problem.
I have had failures in the 22-RE (140,000 miles) and a 1FZ-FE (90,000
miles).
I firmly believe if you have Toyota with a cast iron block and an
aluminum head, you will have a HG failure, just a matter of when.

I would take it back and request a full engine flush
at their cost. The stupid SOB should atleast know how
to install an air filter. Then I would find another
shop to take your truck to.

But, I thought that kind of thing was to be expected at around 100k???
Wws'nt it the V6's that were failing at sigificantly below 100k that
were the problem...

I had no forewarning of a problem. I had flushed the engine cooling system
several months ago (just prior to last winter) and added silicone-free coolant
at the same time I changed the timing belt, water pump, and thermostat.
The temp gage never indicated a potential problem.
In fact when the coolant started to boil out of the radiator and through to
reservoir, the gage still showed an acceptable reading until seconds after the
boiling started.
Actually, I was parking in a strip-mall to get some coffee and a person
mentioned that there was something leaking from under the hood. I glanced at
the temp gage and it was OK (mid-range where it always resided) and thought what
the other person was seeing was air-conditioner water which is always dripping
after running.
I got out and checked and, sure enough, it was coolant. When I immediately
went back to the cab, the temp gage had risen and shortly thereafter peaked at
max temp - but not before.
I shut off the engine and the boiling continued for a short period of time
and I left it cool, thinking that it might be a faulty thermostat.
I added cold water after the temps had stabilized and got several miles
before the same thing happened again. Thankfully, I was with family and their
knowledge of the available dealers - they sent me to what was considered a
better than average dealer.
The rest of the story has been previously told.
