TOY: limited slips offroad performance?

I am considering buying and installing a limited slip in my rear. This is
for a 88 4runner w/22re that sees about 3 to 1 onroad to offroad use.

I am wondering how well they actually perform offroad. I know about their
on-road attributes, so I am really looking for offroad experiences. I need
some type of locker, seems like almost every time I've been stuck a locker
would've gotten me out.

Should I go with a limited slip, or just wait till I can afford a selectable
locker?

Also, the particular diff I am refering to is the supra diff. Does anyone
have experience putting one of these into a 4cyl rear?

Thanks,

Kerry White

I run an Aussie Locker: http://www.offroadlockers.com/

Product review is here: http://www.pirate4x4.com/productreviews/aussie/

Better then any non-selectable locker you can find.

No ratcheting, no loud engages, all around great locker.

Just my opinion of course.

I run Lock-Rights front and rear on my '92.

Off road - PHENOMENAL!!!! Have not been stuck yet.
On Road - a handful would be an understatement. They click, they bang,
they cause the truck to push a bit, and the truck spins much easier
under slick conditions.

Wouldn't trade them for anything but a full-on detroit locker. I do not
want to have to deal with the switches, the air lines, and the other
things that will get ripped from the undercarriage the next time I go
offroad. I want to know I have all wheels pulling for me when the
transfer is in 4 and the hubs are locked. I also like simple systems,
especially when I rely on them to get me home.

Limited slips aren't lockers and lockers aren't limited slips. I'm not
going to get into that here, there are plenty of heated discussions all
over the Internet regarding the differences.

Are you setting up gears too? Seems to me that unless you got the Supra
diff for nothing (and if you did, it is probably shot. IIRC, they are
clutch type limited slips and Supra's have more than enough torque to
tear up the clutch packs.) there would be a gear change involved, which
costs more than the lock right, aussie locker or EZ locker, and is
difficult for a home mechanic (ask me how I know). You could install any
of the automatic lockers mentioned above by yourself in a few hours with
basic know-how and hand tools.

Just my opinions, your mileage may vary.

Mike
