>From my understanding, so long as the exhaust is routed out of the sides and
not straight back there is no issue. What you have to be aware of though is
CO (carbon monoxide) a colorless and odorless gas that WILL kill you. One
thing you might be able to do is stop by a local fire department and see if
they will bring the CO monitor out to check the back. Good luck!

Checking for leaks while staning still may not be important. Its at 
freeway speeds that a vacuume builds up behind the tailgate and pulls 
the exhaust in.  This happens with hard shells to.

Couldn't you get a Carbon Monoxide detector and wire it in somewhere?  They make them for houses...
