Transmission oil mystery..... What section to unbolt?
All those who've had this seal go bad. What section do I unbolt in the
trans to get to the seal? There is the transmission up front, then
there's the transfer adaptor where the main stick is on top of, then
there is the transfer it's self. So where do I unbolt this thing to get
to the seal?
Looking at my 1981 toy manual page 9-14 it shows a seal on the back of
the transfer adaptor. On Page 9-36 it shows this seal being replaced.
Is this the one?
I stopped at the local toyota dealer last night and it was very
difficult to see on the computers. VErry confusing pictures. Plus, the
guy behind the counter kept clicking on different screens. I was about
to slapp his hand off the mouse....GrRRRrr!!!

That's the one Steve, the one in the transfer adapter. On a
conventional, 2WD transmission, the transfer adapter would be called the
"extension housing" and this is where the rear-most transmission seal
resides. Unbolt the transfer case from the adapter by removing the six
(?) bolts from the back side of the xfer case. It wouldn't hurt to
replace the gasket between the xfer and adapter either, but if the
dealer doesn't stock it, and time is of the essence, you can use RTV in
a pinch.
