Re: TOY: Transmission oil mystery.....
Yes. Yellow Long bed... No longer driven to work, because I have a
company truck now. So it's really just a weekend driver now... and
garage kept.
So.. I've never tried taking the tranfer out alone before. However I
have pulled the transmission about 3 times. Will this require a trans
jack? I'll be working alone.
Also, I assume this would be the NEW seal thats laying at the bottom.
Now I have to figure out a way to make it stay in. I had this problem
with the front main seal after replacing the oil pump. The seal kept
popping out. Which reminds me, I better go check that.

Last I checked my manual says that the transfer case
should have automatic transmission fluid not oil in it
(red in color). Manual transmission takes gear oil;
same as diffs. What you have is a rear seal on your
transmission is blown and your front seal on your
transfer case is blown also. You might what to see why
your transmission is making that much preassure to
blow both seals.

It's been a while since I asked for help to do the LSD on my 'T' but I
did finally get it done.
As mentioned, I bought the unit from Jaffarian Volvo Toyota in Haverhill
Ma. using this site: http://www.toyotapartsworld.com/trdfebspcl.htm
@ $229.00 and a bearing and seal kit at http://store.summitracing.com/.
As might be expected, and after help from the Summit experts, I received
the incorrect kit so had to take the extra time to swap out for the correct
item. IIRC, the kit cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $179.00, and
included Timken bearings and everything else necessary except for a shim set
which was to be expected.
The job was more than my experience level would allow so I found an
excellent local shop that did the entire job for just around $400.00
including proper shims from the local Toyota Dealer.
So, for about $800.00, I now have LSD in my T, and with a set of new
Toyo Open Country A/T tires, I never needed to select the FWD option during
the last snow storm here in Connecticut.
Thanks to all on the lists that helped me find the parts I needed and if
anybody is going to do this and want a more in-depth experience from me,
please ask.

A trans jack might help a little, but I did the transfer case on my truck by myself. I was just swapping it out, so I lifted it down and to the side and then lifted the other one up and in place. I wasn't completely alone though, I don't know if I would do it with no one around.
The biggest pain in the butt is holding it in place and trying to get a bolt started in. Good to have another hand for that.
It's not really that heavy though.

Same thing happened to me. W56 5-speed tranny. In my
case, the seal on the output shaft on the transmission
was driven in too far. It should be flush. As Jim
pointed out, there is no seal on the input shaft of
the transfercase, in fact, the bearings are right
there exposed and oil can pass right through them. My
transfer case got so full of oil it started coming out
the top around the shifter.
The seal was hard to find. The dealers in my area had
to special order it. Napa had it. Autozone's reference
manual shows the wrong seal. I'd get the Toyota one
because the Napa one was not that good of quality.
I was able to remove the t-case myself without using a
jack. It is not too heavy. As mentioned putting it
back in is more of a challenge, and you certainly do
not want to damage your newly-replaced seal. A helper
would be a good idea.
The standard, gear driven transfer case takes gear
oil.
Hi Jim!
