TOY: Transmission oil mystery.....

Lately I've been smelling gear oil after driving for a while. I know
the seal on the rear diff leaks a bit so I went to add oil to it. It
really wasn't that low. Then I went up and pulled the filler plug on
the Transfer case and oil started pouring out like it was way over
filled. Not the drain plug the filler plug up on the back to the right
of the output flange. I put the plug back in and went over to the
transmission filler plug. Pulled it, stuck my finger in as far as I
could and couldn't get any oil. So I pumped in all the rest that I had,
Not sure how much but enough to tire out my arm from pumping and it
still wasn't full.

It really hasn't been leaking on the ground that I can see. I had the
trans rebuilt about 3 years ago. I put the oil in myself. What's going
on here? Oil doesn't migrate between trans and transfer right? Where
did the oil in the trans go and how can there be so much in the Transfer?

Steve,

The oil CAN migrate from the transmission to the transfer case *IF* the
rear transmission seal is leaking. Since the transfer case is
essentially mated to the transmission by its extension housing, there is
nowhere else for the oil to go other than the transfer case (it doesn't
have a seal at the input shaft).

I'd be willing to bet that the transmission output seal is laying down
in the space between the transmission an x-fer case. The fix involves
pulling the transfer case to access the rear of the transmission.

BTW, you still have that clean yellow long bed? :)
