Hell of a white knuckler though. Only blown up once sir! Completely striped
the input shaft gear and stretched the housing oops! The shaft made a great
alignment and pilot bushing removal tool though.

Anyway, I've been sick so haven't had a chance to inspect the 87 yet. Also,
since I've been driving the 95 it hasn't been an issue. Have to get it fixed
anyway though, wife wants to drive it. I was also hoping to do some custom
mods that you guys are/were always talking about. We'll see though.

The Exedy clutch brand is all over the net and I found that they make sport
racing clutches along with oem. It's a Japanese firm if that means anything.
Anyone know who makes the clutch assemblies for Toyota?

Another question what's the procedure for replacing the rear main seal?
Does it involve the oil pan seal too?

Thanks guys!

Peter

I hope you have a 4Cyl - but this is what you are look at for a rear main seal...

Once you have the flywheel and the oil pan off anyway.

This sounds like what happens to high mileage BMW M94 transmissions (on
motorcycles). The clutch splines corrode and either strip on the clutch
pressure plate, or the input shaft outright breaks at the splined
portion. Sweet!

Aisin or Asco is the OEM supplier. Exedy is new to me. It may simply be
a re-branded OE clutch for all I know.

You can do it one of two ways:

1. Pry the seal out with a screwdriver. It is a one piece seal, like one
found in a wheel bearing.

2. Remove the rear main seal housing (aluminum, bolted to the block) and
then remove the seal. It is easier to access the seal this way and makes
installation easier, as you aren't fighting the crank itself.

I think it is retained to the block 5 bolts, plus two that go through
the oil pan. You don't need to remove the pan and your truck's pan has
no gasket, it is sealed with Toyota "FIPG" (formed in place gasket), a
type of RTV. You'll see how it all works once you get into the job, it
isn't that complicated.

Keep us informed of your progress!
