TOY: newbie needs help diagnosing front end noise
Hello, I'm Scott from Huntsville, Alabama
I have an '84 4x4 with solid front axle and 117k
miles.
There is a clicking noise on the driver-side front
that
is apparent from 25-55 mph. It is less apparent when
turning left at those speeds and is more noisy when
turning right. I have repaced the inner and outer
wheel bearings and races with no change in noise.
There is also a squeeling noise at parking lot speed.
Any help would be appreciated. Have looked at the
past threads and have come to conclusion it might be
the knuckle bearings ?
Scott

Hi Scott,
When was the last time you had the front wheel bearings repacked with grease?
Do you make water crossings that cover the axle? The wheel bearings should
be inspected and repacked or replaced depending on the wear every 6 to 12
months. (depending on the wear and specific usage)
Hope this helps!

Scott, sounds a lot like wheel bearings, but you've
already covered that. Maybe the locking hub on that
side isn't releasing? You could swap them side to
side to see if the noise switches to the other side.
Broken birfs can also push out the axle and not let
the locking hub disengage.
I would do a quick swap of hubs, if that doesn't
identify anything tear it down into the birfield, if
thats OK you are 90% of the way to replacing the
knuckle bearings. If one side is gone it's a pretty
good bet the other is right there too. All Pro has a
knuckle rebuild kit for around $100 with everything
except wheel bearings.
