After reading all this discussion about timing, I wonder if that may be my
problem...
I recently aquired an '85 4runner with a Jacobs Ultra Coil. I don't know
that the coil is the problem, but I'm trying to track it down. I am not a
mechanic of any repute, so bear with me...
The engine (22re) was rebuilt about 4k miles ago. I have been having
problems starting the vehicle: when I turn the key I get a "click" sound and
plenty of power, but it won't spark. This has been happening intermittently
for a couple months now. I had recently replaced the starter and thought
that maybe the wire lead going to the celenoid was getting a bad connection,
because I would jiggle that connection and usually get the engine to start
up after that. Now it won't. Most recently a jump start got me going again,
but I'm pretty sure the battery is good - my lights are strong and I seem to
have plenty of power when I turn the key on - so I'm not sure how to explain
that jump.
I saw some arcing one day between the distributor cap and the power stearing
pump, and replaced the cap, rotor and spark plug wires. In doing so, I
noticed that the connection on the cap coming from the plug 2nd from the
front is way dirty - I sanded the receptacle on the cap down to get a better
connection. No dice. I don't have a voltmeter (I will later today) so I
haven't been able to test a lot of the components, but I thought someone
here might be able to tell me if I'm even headed down the right road.
Any thoughts?
thanks in advance,
Carter

To recap - if I read that right... you turn the key, hear a click, but the
engine does not turn over?
If that is the case, then check the cables going from the Alt to the
battery, and the cables going from the battery to the starter - specifically
the smaller one going to the solenoid if that one was causing problems
already. I had to replace that wire on mine because it was doing the same
thing. I had to get out and under the hood to jiggle that wire one too many
times in below zero weather... although I did have a good system of jiggling
in my seat to get the truck to rock while turning the key so I could start
it... I was told it was quite humorous to watch but it worked.

Hello List I'm New!
I have a problem this morning on the way to work. I went out and started my
truck (1990 Toyota 4x4, 22re) and let it run for about 15min (its 0 here
today). Drove to work (only about 5 miles) and I get to work and the whole
thing is steaming after I turn it off. I also have no heat. How can the
thing overheat when its so cold out. Any suggestions? When I shut it off
this morning I heard bubbling so I assume that there is anti-freeze in there
(there was last time I check about a month ago). I didn't investagate it
yet as it was steaming a lot and wanted to let it cool down. Any help would
be great!

Ha! Good one! Maybe I'll give the neighbors a show.
I am able to reach down to the selenoid from above, but it still sucks when
the wind is blowing and it's pouring rain or snow. I would try to be careful
which direction I'd park in case I had to pop the hood to start it again.
I just re-spliced a new plug onto that wire, so I can't imagine that could
still be causing this problem. I'll check all the other wires though.

The last time that happened to me in my 80 20R - it was colder than that and
it was my water pump.
Changed it in a gas station parking lot in about 20 minutes (after getting
the part) and was on my way.
The first thing to check would be your thermostat though... as a matter of
fact, I would just replace it one way or the other. As a general rule, if
it gets that cold by you, I would replace it every December.

Where is *what*?
The thermostat is inside the upper radiator hose's aluminum joint next to
the head.
I think it's like two bolts. Just drain the rad a bit first.
The water pump is the thing that the fan is attached to. Lots of bolts.
Doesn't come off real easy if it's been on for a while.

Yeah, best to take out the rad for that... makes it a hell of a lot easier.
The radiator is held in by 4 bolts or something like that, and then you
have the Upper and Lower hoses (no big deal) and you may have a fan shroud.
After that, just take the belt off, there are usually like 4 bolts holding
the fan on to the water pump, and then there are 8 or so bolts holding on
the water pump in various sizes... just be careful you don't bust one.
Pretty straightforward actually.
My water pump was pretty obvious when it went... it was making some very
ill-reputed noises.
The thermostat is easy to replace though. Like he said, drain the radiator
a little with the little drain tab on the bottom passenger side of the
radiator (careful it is plastic) - then undo the two bolts that hold on the
elbow at the end of the upper radiator hose (I think there is a sensor there
that you have to undo too) pull the elbow out of the way, and replace the
thermostat just underneath it, which is just laying there in the hole.
I would replace it with a Toyota one, but that is just me.
