Sorry if I lead you on... but I'm probably not in the position to spend
"hundreds" on the truck right now. Just trying to get the dialog going to
see what you have there. Is it one of the ones on this site?
<http://autoanything.com/waagguards.asp?advid=5066> Hopefully you'll find
a buyer... otherwise it will probably be summer before I add to my (1996
T-100) truck.

Thanks for the response.

good day james. i wouldn't call it leading, you were merely inquiring :)
yes that is the correct bar.

also, if you or anyone else is interested i
am flexible on the price, this site (autoanything.com) sells it new for
440, i paid 500 :( ,
and the bar is very new and in perfect condition. thanks all

cheers

Howdy list,

I used to be subscribed to this list as 'trevarthan', but
I haven't been subscribed in almost a year due to my busy
work schedule.

I know that technical vehicle maintenance questions are
sometimes frowned upon by this list, and I don't want to
post off topic.

So, does anyone here know of a good place to ask questions
about technical vehicle maintenance?

For instance, my particular question this time is about
transmissions. It's not particularly related to 4x4s,
as it applies to both my nissan 240sx and my toy 4x4.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, then I'll
hop on over to the right list or BBS.

Thanks.

Not sure where ya got that idea from. In my opinion, this is exactly the
right place to ask technical vehicle maintenance questions, especially as
they relate to a Toyota 4x4. Ask away!

Well, have you ever been to www.pirate4x4.com?

I thought a couple of the more 'hard core' guys might have
come back from there to here.

Before I left, I heard a bit of complaining that people didn't
talk enough about 'serious' issues like suspension, gears, and big
tires. (Which is all well and good, mind, just not what I usually
talk about)

But, if you don't mind me posting, I don't mind posting.

Here goes:

First, some background:
-----------------------

I have a 1995 Nissan 240sx SE (4cyl 2.4L DOHC) with a 5 speed manual (RWD).
I also have a 1994 Toyota Pickup (short bed, 4cyl 22re) with a 5 speed manual (4x4).

I bought the truck 2.5 years ago with maybe 115,000 miles on it. Now it has 135,000
miles.

I bought to car 1.5 years ago with maybe 98,000 miles on it. Now it has 115,000 miles.

I JUST changed the manual tranny fluid in BOTH of these vehicles for the FIRST time.

For the truck, I put in a cheap GL3/4/5 combo non-synth from Coastal.

For the car, I put in a decent GL4/5 combo (I assume this anyway, I got a lube shop
to do this for me) non-synth from Pennzoil.

The truck was 'biting' a tad every now and then when shifting into 5th and 2nd before
I changed the tranny fluid. No real grinding. Just a little bite as it went into gear.
I changed the shifter bushings last summer, so that's not the cause.

The car was just beginning to feel a little sluggish when shifting, and it might bite
ocassionally going into 2nd on a cold day.

After the fluid change, the truck was almost undrivable! When cold, it would refuse to
go into 2nd sometimes, and grind horribly until it warmed up. Even once it warmed up it
would grind occassionally.

So, I bought 1 qt of GM Syncromesh Transmission fluid, drained a quart of the fluid
from the transmission, and added the GM Syncromesh.

Now the truck feels only slightly worse than it did before I changed the fluid. It bites
occassionaly going into 2nd and 5th when cold, but once it warms up it shifts decently.

The car is the same. Only slightly worse than before I changed the fluid.

Here's the question:
---------------------

Is there anything I can do to make these vehicles shift better?

Did I do something wrong? Or did I just wait too long to change the fluid, thus damaging
the tolerances in the tranny's syncros?

This has been a real nightmare learning experience for me. I'm kicking myself
for not changing both transmissions fluids the minute I bought the vehicles.

Thanks for any info you can give me!

Sincerely,

Jesse

Both the Nissan and Toyota shift more smoothly with a GL-4
rated gear oil. The one oil guaranteed to make shifting easier and
to get rid of most of that "silent grind is Red Line MT-90
http://www.saber.net/~monarch/MT-90jpg Most NAPA stores
carry it or can special order it. Pricey at $7.95 per quart.

Another option is Pennzoil GL-4 gear oil.
http://www.saber.net/~monarch/pennGL4-jpg
It's available only in 5 gallon buckets for about $38.00
Only pennzoil dealers carry it. And only larger cities have
a pennzoil dealer.

The MT-90 works well even in worn transmissions. I've used
it in a large variety of Toyota manual trannys, both new and
old and both front wheel drive and rear wheel drive and it noticably
improved shifting in every one.

First off, POR can go piss up a rope as far as I'm concerned. Their
general attitude sucks. OK, I feel better now......

I have Torco Synthetic in Patch's trans & t/c. It made a little
difference, but not a lot. I wanted Redline, but I needed it
unexpectedly and that's what I could get that was of quality. I can't
complain about it, but it didn't help the shifting. On a positive note
it didn't hurt it either.

I doubt you did much damage to the clearences. What weight oil did you
put in and was it what the manual calls for ? I tried 90-140 in the DB
for a trip to the dezert during real late spring one time. I could
barely shift it when warm. With the synthetics I suspect that you could
use a slightly lighter weight than normal. I wouldn't do this for heavy
off road use, just light duty fwy miles.
