TOY: question..

I have an 86 Toyota pick-up with the 22RE. I just re-did the head gasket
and I have a loud valve noise that is driving me nuts. I adjusted the valves
to spec with no change...can anyone think of anything I'm missing? or have
an idea where to look next.
      Thanks,JS

Did you do the hot torque too? If you only do a cold torque to spec, you'll
likely have some valve chatter. To hot torque, run the engine at idle for
20 minutes, and retorque to the same specs.

I didn't let it run all that long... but I did wait for the heater to start
working.
I noticed that they where all about the same spec.. .008 exhaust and intake
would that cause excusive noise?.. and would re torqueing the head cause
that spec to change from how it was before I removed it
.Before this project there was very little (if any) noise.
Sorry about the stupid questions but I'm a little green in this field..
                                   Thanks again,JS

Hmmmm.. never heard of hot torqing the head. On an aluminum head I'd be
afraid to if toyota did'nt recommend it. Anyway, I've always had
trouble getting the valves adjusted right on 22r's.
I think the spec in the toyota manual is wrong or something. After I
replaced my head gasket I tried several times hot and cold and always
ended up with lots of valve noise. So I gave up and took it to the
dealer. It was nice and quiet when I got it back. I asked them what they
did, if they had any tricks and they just said do it while its hot. YEA!
BUT I TRIED THAT!!

Exhaust leak perhaps? Is it a snapping noise? Where does the sound seem to
come from and can you hear it in the driver's seat?

The first time I tried adjusting my valves I noticed that they were
initially much tighter then the factory recommended .008 int. and .012 ex.
while the engine was hot. After I adjusted to the recommended clearance, I
had a LOT of valve noise. I checked the pirate4x4 and 4x4wire bbs and
learned on one of them that some people adjust to .006 int. and .010 ex.
while cold. After I did that my engine is as quiet as it was when I got it.

Could it be you timing chain slaping the side of your timing chain
cover??

Those crappy plastic timing chain tensioners and guides like to break
really easy. And they make some noise when your timing chain is rubbing.

I will try that when I get home tonight I guess... can't really go wrong at
this point.. I did notice that both the exhaust and intake where at the same
setting last night which isn't great but still won't make it any quieter to
give them more slack. I will try the .006 and .010 tonight though and see
how it does. of course we are talking in mm's correct?..

I think he meant hot adjusting the valves... what did the dealer charge you
to set them up?

It's true these trucks came off the ships from Japan set to .006"-.007" Intake
and .010 - .011" Exhaust with the engine fully warmed up.
It's also true power and fuel economy is optimal
at these factory original settings and the engine is quiet.

The valves should NOT be adjusted when cold because the valve clearances
on cylinder #4 naturally expand as the engine cools whereas on cylinders
#1-3 the clearances contract. So if you set the clearances all the same
with the engine cold they will not all be the same when the engine is hot.
The factory engineers know all this which is why they say always adjust hot.

Paul Cherubini
418,000 troublefree miles using .006"-.007" and .010"-.011" clearances
with the engine fully warmed up.

Hey Scott,
Yes I did run the the engine before changing any settings and right away
there was a nasty valve clattering...so when I went to adjust them last
night I noticed they were all at about .008 on both sides... I will try and
warm the motor up tonight and re adjust them... Hopefully this noise will go
away.
I will post the results later...
                                         Thanks,JS

Someone decided to lock my hubs for me on my 87 pickup before I went on a trip
of about 700 miles. Now I'm noticing a grinding/squeaking/squealing noise
coming from my left hub. What do you think...does it sound like it's shot? I
haven't rebuilt one of these before so some advice would be appreciated. Is
it just easier to find one at a junk yard or buy a new one? I remember the
cone washers on the hub bolts being a real pain when I went to replace my
driveaxle...any pointers for dealing with those?
TIA,
Shaun

instead of going .008 and .012 go .007 and .011 this will take care of the
noise and will not be to tight.
this should work fine.

Well not to drag this topic out to much... but as I said earlier both the
exhaust and the intake clearances are set to the same setting right now...
wouldn't giving the exhaust side more slack make the sound worse?..
(for the record I didn't set them to this they were like that when I
reinstalled the head and checked them after running it and hearing the
noise)
