Hello all,

I am going to be towing a 5th wheel camping trailer with my 2001 tacoma V6.

Is there such a thing as too much transmission cooler? Is too big about
right? Should I upgrade to a different transmission fluid?

Stay out of overdrive whatever you. Toyota motorhome
owners report tranny sump oil temps are 30 degrees higher when
in overdrive.

There isn't such a thing as too big of a cooler while you're towing,
but there can be when you're not towing. Your ideal temp range for the
fluid is above 160*f but not more than 200*f. You want it to get warm
enough to boil off any condensation, and not a lot hotter than that.
Much beyond 250*f and you can start measuring trans life in minutes.
Search "oil coolers" here:
http://www.secureperformanceorder.com/products/index.cfm you might also
try: http://ormebros.com/ for the plumbing bits you'll need to connect
it.

Given your location you might consider using a thermostat in the cooler
lines. Read here: http://www.batinc.net/thermos.htm the same thing
generally applies to auto tranies except they don't have to deal with
combustion by-products.

Another way to tackle this is to plumb the cooler in-line with the
stock cooler, but put it in the system b4 the stock cooler. This will
work the fluid harder as it will get warmed in the trans, cooled in the
aux cooler, and quite possibly warmed again in the stock cooler. That
it gets warmed again is OK, at least then it's something close to
engine coolant temp. You'll just need to service the trans more often.
Say twice a year of you do a lot of towing. Install a drain plug in the
trans pan, it will make life a lot less messy and a lot easier.

When I put the AOD in the Ranchero I was cautioned about towing in OD.
I trained myself to manually pull it out of OD at the slightest hill.
