TOY: '84 22R block/'85 22RE head
Pat FogleI have an '84 xtracab with an 22R block that has recently been
rebuilt, and I was considering swapping in a 22RE head and all the rest of
the required 22RE stuff. This head has been recently rebuilt and resurfaced
and ported, and it has a new DOA timing set. Is this swap possible? Are
the engines compatible? Has anyone else ever done this swap? Will the
probable HP/MPG increase worth the work?

Been done many times. Definatly worth it. Not neccessarily for milage or
power, but the biggest benifit IMO is the ability to run off camber sections
without stalling. A friend of mine has this problem constantly, even on
small inclines. Of course, his float level needs to be adjusted, but it
still won't cure it. He has to get himself to flat ground using the starter
while in gear with the clutch out. He really needs EFI.
If you want to read up on it, check out what Geiger did:
