TOY: Using Oil
Pat FogleI have an '84 with a 22R (no EFI). I got a complete longblock
rebuild done less than a year ago. It seems to be using oil. It needs a
1/2 quart about every two tanks of gas. It used a lot more than that before
the rebuild, because it burned oil real bad. No I don't see any evidence of
burning oil, and I would not expect to since it was rebuilt. But I really
don't know what to look for other than blue smoke exhaust. Also, no
evidence of any leaks, such as drip spots when parked. Is that normal?
Shouldn't it keep the same oil level between oil changes? Is there
something I am missing?
Any help or info is appreciated.
Pat

How many miles is it that you lose the 1/2 quart? I think Toyota spec
is 1 quart every 1500 miles. ALL cars use oil just to a lesser
extent, rings aren't much of a seal really and some oil is always
going to get past. What oil are you using? I wouldn't run 5w30 or
anything.. I suspect you are fine. Make sure you check it after
letting it sit for awhile..etc.

I was just estimating the 1/2 quart of oil for every 2 gas tanks. That
would be about 450 to 500 miles for me, but that may be a low estimate. I
may be right within that 1500 mile spec. Is that spec listed in the FSM?

My 85 4Runner (new long block about 2 years ago) uses about 1/2 quart every
3.5/4 tanks. I use Valvoline or Pennzoil 20W50 all year (I live in Phoenix
AZ). So compared to you I use a little less but it still uses it.

When was the last time you cleaned your throttle body bore
and plate? A dirty throttle body can cause high oil consumption
and fool an owner into thinking he/she has worn valve stem oil
seals, rings, etc.
An unworn 22R with good compression should not burn
more than 2000 - 3000 miles per quart.
One way to reduce consumption is to install a the 22R turbo
model thermostat - which is a 180 degree stat - in place of
the factory original 190 degree stat.

Marc, just curious - how many miles did you have on your rig when you did
the rebuild?
I also have an 85 and I was at about 150k when a rod bearing went out.

My 81 used oil about the same. No signs of it in the exhaust, radiator,
etc. Sold it (big mistake) before I figured out what it was but suspect it
was a leak. Thinking maybe rear main and was just leaking when it was running?
No drip spots though. Doing enough mud riding at the time that I think that
covered noticeable signs of the leak.
Do check the radiator but also get it really clean underneath and you
should be able to tell. My 86 (efi) uses no oil between changes.
Good luck, John

Don't think there's an FSM for it. Long ago, my uncle told me "Ain't
nothing wrong with burning a little oil. Just means that it's circulating
around." Truth is just like the others have said. The rings will leak a
bit of oil by and you won't see it in the exhaust. That's why it's a good
idea to check your oil every fillup. Just don't want it like the '61 Chevy
I have. Used to put in a quart every 150 miles before swapping in the new
engine. Cleanest oil I've ever seen though, but it was a real PITA to clean
up the oil that was spraying down the side of the truck. Had a blown front
seal.
