TOY: 4 Wheel Drive Problems?
So it actually iced over in Charlotte so I decided to use the 4 Wheel Drive
on my '96 Tacoma. But I feel like it was acting weird. Occassionally when
I would come to a stop it would feel like the parking brake was on, it would
just come to a stop and it would do this in reverse too. I would gas it a
little and it just seemed like there was something holding it back. Does
anyone know what I am talking about? Is this common or is something wrong?

Hi Robert,
Any chance your truck might have driveline bind?
Sometimes while in 4wd and on icy roads you will hit dry spots
then the drive line will bind. Also remember that in 4wd high
your front end helps to slow you down.
Just a thought. ;-)

My 87 does the same thing, ESPECIALLY when cold. I attribute this to the
gear lube in the front diff not being stirred up much and being thick as
molasses.
drive it long enough to warm up and it'll be fine, though you will always
feel the drive line drag.

Are you leaving your parking brake on when it's parked? The brakes will
freeze to the drums sometimes. Happens to me all the time when I go
snowboarding. Just drive it for a while and it heats up and lets go.

Robert,
I had a similar problem on my '94 4 Runner. It turned out that I somehow
got a bunch of oil/fuel (probably from a deep puddle) in the right rear
drum. This was causing the drum to lock up - it was especially bad when the
truck was cold, but there was still considerable drag when warm - but in 2
wheel drive, it was hardly noticable.
I took the drum, removed the pads, and cleaned everything up with acetone.
That was October of last year, and everything has been great since!
