RE: TOY: Transmission/TCase Compatibiity (drive shaft)

Yep long beds and extra cabs have longer shafts... and I think that is why
they have the center bearing.

Now, I don't want any of the Short bed, single cab guys to feel inadequate
with their shorter shafts now...

;-)

Hi Pat,
I remember reading about this in the past, yes the drive shafts are longer
with the X-tra cab Toyota pickups. (someone verify this)

If I remember right, the reason I didn't consider it was because it wasn't
coated?

Does it have any kind of protective coating?

I know a header won't last forever, but the draw to the LCE one was that
people that have had them for a while have made comments as to how well they
have held up over time.

Did a search on the Pirate forum and the Thorley was recommended right along
side the LCE.

I found these quotes:
"I've always felt the Thorley (Tri-Y) design produces low-end torque a
little better than a 4-into-1 setup."

"A Tri-Y header(Thorley) is good for about 7hp at 4500, a 1-1/2
4into1(Downey/LC) is good for 7hp at 2500rpm. That's at the rear wheels."

Other than that, no one that had it seemed to complain.

I read a bunch of the posts but there really wasn't a lot of specific
information... just stuff like "Get the LCE or Thorley Header..."

Downey makes pretty good headers. I really like the fenderwell headers on my
Land Cruiser... yes they were chromed. I suppose you could get them coated?

You may be right. We used to tent camp there years ago
and I don't remember it being a problem, but we only
had a few people so space wasn't an issue.

That area by Camp Rock has become very popular. There
have been people out there everytime I've been out
there recently. I was out there just a few weeks ago
and there were a lot of people there.

I have been getting some responses from my post on the
BBS.

I'll be heading out Friday evening.

If you want, download the map I posted and mark the
spot you are thinking of and e-mail it back to me.
I'll clean it up and post it so the others can find
the spot easily.

Mike

Can anyone tell me how complicated it is to replace the neutral safety
switch on an '85 4runner?

This thing is somewhat temperamental: sometimes it starts and sometimes it
doesn't. It wouldn't start for me this weekend - in park or neutral - but
the guy at the garage is able to get it going, and it starts every time. He
thought maybe it was a voltage drop between the battery and the starter (new
starter), but I guess there are several thing he would have to test to
determine that. In the recent past I've sometimes had to put it in neutral
to start it, but as I said, this weekend even that wasn't working. It's an
automatic, by the way.

Have any of you dealt with this issue before?

thanks,
Carter

I have been using the Downey V-6 headers for the past 90,000 miles. They
were chrome, when I got them. They have not rusted. They have not leaked,
or cracked any where. I installed them, with cross drilled bolts, and .041
stainless steel safety wire. The only problems that I have are that the cross
over pipe, will be in the way of my front drive-shaft, when I install my SAS.
The only other complaint is that they have a slip fit collector tube, instead of

a 3 bolt flange. I have had to remove the exhaust pipes for removing the tranny
and so forth. I had to cut the slip joint, and reweld it upon reinstallaion.
I would prefer a 3 bolt flange to couple to the exhaust pipes.

So far as coatings are concerned...Duplicolor makes a paint that will form a
high
temp coating similar to ceramics. 1600° F heat resistant and solvent resistant
after cure. It is available at O'reilly Auto Parts, Autobone, etc.

The headers did add a little pep to the V-6, but not sure if you would call it
extra
horses.
Hope this helps.

Be sure that the shifter aligns with the cutout in the cab floor.
I swapped an R151F from an '87 Turbo truck into my '92
4Runner. My shifter has been contorted and modified 3 times,
and it still hits. The 5 speed shifter from the transmission is five
inches forward of the cutout, and the tranfer case shifter was
1-2 inches too far aft of the cutout.
Marlin can answer all of your questions concerning the tranny swap.
Give him a call

It's really hard as a manufacturer to consistantly get 3 bolt flanges
that stay sealed. A slip-fit will usually carbon up after a little bit
and seal itself.
