Re: TOY: Calico Trip - So. CA

Brandon, 2wd Lo is good enough for 90+% of what's out there. Coming ?

Mike, let's camp in Mule or Phillips Cyns. That should make camp easy
for people to find. I have a rough map I can distribute off-list if
need be. How about the wide spot on the right in Phillips just past the
turn-off out of Mule ?

Anybody have any ideas why an exhaust manifold would be so hot it glowed
orange while the rest of the engine was at the proper operating temperature?
EGR or timing have been suggested so far. Any ideas? (It's an '88 22re)

Thanks,
Kerry White

My guesses are either it's running lean or the timing is late
(retarded). If performance is poor it might be a plugged or partly
plugged cat or muffler.

Is the Cat partially clogged?
That is the first thing that comes to my mind at midnight this Turkey day.

Well..,

Could be running lean since I know my TPS is bad, and O2 sensor is probably
bad also, but it sure doesn't smell lean. The exhaust pipe is just hanging
loose from the front of the cat though, so cat or muffler have no effect,
unless lack of backpressure could be the cause? Timing may be slightly off,
I'm going to check in the morning. I was told that advanced timing could
cause this but it would seem that delayed timing could cause the burn to be
incomplete when the exhaust valve opens allowing a little fire to escape and
heat up the exhaust manifold, I don't know why advanced timing would cause
it. EGR may also be malfunctioning, I know that the purposes of EGR are to
reduce emissions and lower combustion chamber temperature, but even if it
were never on it shouldn't make that much difference should it?

I know I can find out whats wrong if I had time, I have the FSM and know how
to troubleshoot, but my weekends filled with a term paper, community
service, and baby watching. Any suggestions/words of wisdom greatly
appreciated :)

Thanks,
Kerry White
