TOY: frames
Is a frame from an 85 4x2 exactly the same as from a 4x4?
If so, how much is a bare frame in perfect condition worth?
Thanks,
Kerry White

Hi Kerry,
take a look at the front end of an '85 Toyota 4wd, then look at
the front of an '85 Toyota 2wd and you will see that they are two
different animals. :-|
The main difference that comes to my mind is the front steering and suspension.
If you are asking to potentially cut the entire front suspension out of
the 2wd, then yes it 'could' be done. I have read that at least one Toyota
owner has done this particular modification.
As for all of the body mounts, fuel tank skid/protection plate, beefier
rear suspension, frame mounts for the transfer-case crossmember, etc. I
don't have the inside information.
I can tell you this, with my 3.0L Toyota V-6 engine swap into Bouncing-Betty,
(my 1984 Toyota 4Runner), there seems to be one system affecting another.
The best analagy would be to set up a line of dominos and tip one to fall on
another. ;-)
The latest progress report with my swap is:
- I had two custom-made flexible fuel lines made.
1. From the tank to the fuel filter (FF), one from the FF to the engine.
2. Custom 1-1/4 inch body lift (BL), to ease access to wires and lines.
(above link to my 'projects' page.)
My goal is to install the BL this weekend and have the engine start before
Thanksgiving. (any volunteers to help?) :^)

Good luck with the frame!

As a matter of clarification (and although I am not particularly interested
for my own needs) I have been taking a peak at Buds site off and on for a
while to see what the frame project turned out like. I don't think he has
any in production, or even has a finished prototype yet... unless I missed
something.

Yeah Mike,
you're right I just visited his site. The frame pictured on his replacement
frame page looks nice. :-) I would imagine it would be made to order?
AFAIK, his company is the only source for replacement Toyota mini truck frames.
Do you know of anyone else that offers replacement frames?

I don't know where you guys are located, but there are at least 3 wrecking
yards here in Phoenix that I've seen with complete, straight, non-rusty 4x4
frames. All it would take is a truck freight company (Viking comes to mind)
and ship it to your house. And frames are pretty light, 2-3 people should be
able to lift the thing (my old FJ40 frame was like that). I think Jay
Kopycinski(sp) (see pirate4x4.com toyota section on "building a tube rig")
paid less than $200 for his frame.

Yeah, been busy with crossmembers, mounts and traction bars. The frame
project has been at a standstill. Will be bringing it back into the shop to
get it done soon. I really need to wheel my 4Runner, the kids want to go,
and they want us to have 2 rigs on the trail...
We'll see about that... :)
For those interested in a frame, please email me, and I'll put you on an
update list if you want. Or just keep watching the site. I promise, it
will change soon!
