"my 4Runner decided to become friends with the wall of Odessa canyon"
That would be the narrow, off-camber slot of a hillclimb just below the
mine itself ? That's a trickier spot than it looks. I have video of a
couple of my Dune Buggy friends coming up that. The 2 LC guys who were
waiting to go down-canyon couldn't believe what they were seeing.....

I have an 83 p/u with the bench seat back and bucket
bottoms. The seat is about shot. Any good replacement
that won't jam my head into the roof or kill my leg
room too much?
Thanks,

These: http://www.verdoneautoupholstery.com/customseats.html go about
$150 each. Sometimes on sale for $129/ea.

That would be correct! I was the first one to go up
and went for it without a spotter. The holes in the
left side were nice and deep and the next thing I knew
I had slid over to within inches of the wall. Not a
whole lot that could be done at that point as any
movement brought me closer and closer. Sigh...
Everyone else stayed as far away from that wall as
possible and made it up fine although not without some
excitement. I was thinking about how bad it would suck
to roll a vehicle in that notch.
Anyone have a spare LH taillight lens?
I'll post pictures later tonight or tomorrow
hopefully.
Now the rest of Odessa was a highway, it filled in
with sand and someone has done A LOT of rock stacking.
Also, someone has removed a HUGE boulder from the
obstacle at the mouth of the canyon, taking all the
fun out of it. Believe it or not, Duran was actually
more challenging (not counting the obstacle at the
mouth of Duran). Of course, it there is a good rain
before the Nov trip things will change again.

At one point, TRD had a set, but from what I have
heard they are spendy and more for hi-rev racing.

The real advantage of a roller rocker is in a pushrod engine. Most of
those use a stamped steel rocker with poor and inconsistant geometry. I
know of one set made for a Toyota pushrod 4 that gained a magic 15-20
HP because the ratio & geometry of the stock parts is so poor. So even
though the cam lobes are as identical as the grinder can make them,
valve A opens .500" while valve B only opens .475" because the rockers
aren't the same ratio and they tend to flex under high spring loads.
OHC engines don't need high seat pressure springs to function properly.
The other advantage of roller rockers is that with really high valve
lifts the rocker tip tends to push the valve stem sideways at the very
beginning and again near the very end of the lift cycle. The roller tip
helps prevent this from wearing the guides out too fast. OHC engines
rarely need such high valve lifts, so it isn't nearly an issue to worry
about.
