Re: TOY: Hey

Hey Mike, don't forget to tell us how Calico goes.
As for the Chevy's, it's a very popular swap. I'd say about 30% of the
Pirate BB guys are running them. I'm gonna throw some on with a 3/4
elliptic setup. Toy top leafs, prob 2 leafs per side. Might even buggy out
the front springs!
You'll get to see them though. Sean has them on his truck now, but his
truck is down for the SAS.

I'm investigating the 63" Chevy spring swap right now.
>From what I have read, it sounds like they work great
with no downsides except for their extreme length.
They stick out past the rear tires pretty far and I am
afraid of banging them too much coming off ledges. But
I am interested to hear some "real world" experiences.

Well, I finally finished putting on the Skyjacker 5" lift on my '84 Xtracab
last night. Everything has worked out OK I think, except for somehow I got
like 2" more lift in the front than in the rear. I got like 5-1/2" in the
rear and more than 7" in the front. I figured that I could balance this out
by putting on some longer shackles in the rear, but also by adding the
overload leaf and a plate from the stock spring pack to the new springs on
the lift. The leaf and plate alone would give me about an inch. Would that
work you think? I know I would need new spring center bolts for the
additional spring pack thickness (not the ubolts, the bolt in the center of
the spring). Would I need to increase the shim angle as well or would the
5" lift shim angle be adequate?

One thing I can't figure out is how I got so much in the front out of what
was supposively a 5" lift. Skyjacker says that it is a weight issue, but
won't help me so far or give me much advice on how to correct. My anti sway
bars are angled pretty good due to the 2 inch increase, and so is the drop
drag link. Are the 5" antisway bar extenders and the drop drag link
adequate for the 7" lift I am getting?

Also, I thought Skyjacker would have better customer service than I am
currently getting. I think I have figured out a workable solution, but they
won't even respond to my complaints, except to tell me what I already know
about how my truck is obviously unbalanced. I even suggested that they
could just send me new spring center bolts, and additional shims if needed,
but they don't respond. Where could I find those bolts.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Pat

i am no authority on any of this, but i have plans to remove the fat load
leaf from my spring pack this weekend because it bends the hell out of
the last 5" of the springs when it is fully compressed. what i mean is
that on the side that is stuffed, the shorter load leaf dosn't bend and
therefore the bend is taking place on the 4 or 5" of spring that hangover
the load leaf on each side. i'm sure that is quite bad for the springs,
plus it limits the overall spring compression on that side, so it can't
even hit the bumpstops.

on the other hand, i would not have been able to tow a U-haul without the
load leaf. so my advise is to see if the fronts sag and go with the
shackles and leave the load leaf out.

Has anyone had their Distributer re-curved? If so, how much did you have
it re-curved, and what did you tell the shop you wanted to have done, and
accomplished?
I am wanting to have this done, so any help would be appreciated!

TIA

That NW operation sells a re-curve kit. Last I looked at it, it was $11
which seemd rather pricy for a couple of springs. I have a distributor
out of a Celica that I'm tempted to try the springs & weights out of.
Then I remember that if anything it's likely to put more timing into
the lower part of the RPM range. It doesn't ping now unless I do
something stupid, so I think I'll leave it alone.

thanks Thom!

I have heard people tell me that they have noticed definite gains in power
by doing this.
(which is why I want to have it done, and heard it is around 25.00 to
re-curve it)
