MEK a.k.a. methyl ethyl ketone (solvent, catalyst, sterilizer)
methylene chloride a.k.a. dichloromethane (chlorinated solvent - volatile
solvent, chemical stripper)

Both are pretty toxic.... I've used both to clean in preparation for
Loctite, but since many Loctites *contain* MEK, it is probably the better
application. IIRC, you can thin most Loctite products with MEK, but
Loctite's own cleaner, Chisel, contains methylene chloride.

I say MOST Loctite products because they have a HUGE range, with epoxy,
anaerobic, and cyanoacrylate adhesives....

...but I may have sniffed too many of those chemicals while reading their
labels. :p

Mine's pretty noisy too, I'm going to use the next size slimmer feeler gauge
next time. I wonder if there are roller rockers available for the 22re?
That'd be sweet.

If you run them too tight you run the risk of the valves not completely
seating when the engine gets really hot. You will increase the
effective duration of the cam at the expense of the valves not spending
enough time on the seat to transfer enough of it's heat to the head. In
the case of the exhaust valve that can lead to a burnt valve. If you
never operate the engine at high revs, this won't be a problem. If you
operate it at high revs for long periods, this could be a real problem.
I advise baby steps when going in this direction.

I ran valve clearances of .005 (intake) and .009 (exhaust)
slight drag for the first 160,000 miles on my '92 22RE because that's
the setting Toyota in Japan set the engine at when it was brand new.
I figured Toyota engineers knew what they were doing. Then
for the subsequent 254,000 miles I ran .007/.011 stiff sliding fit
clearances because I liked the more free revving feel this gave to the
engine.

Now with 414,000 miles on the engine it still runs like new
with like new compression. My conclusion: clearances as
tight as .005/.009 cause no damage on the aluminum rocker
'85-'95 22R series models in normal driving, including sustained 75-80 MPH
driving across California's Central Valley in 100-110 degree
summer weather with the AC on.
