TOY: Steering Question

I have an '86 4runner with IFS. About a month ago I went 4wheeling and had
no problems, don't think I hit anything too hard. When I got back on the
highway my steering wheel was no longer centered. It was about 120deg off,
where the bottom of the wheel was at 10:00 position. The truck tracks
straight even when I let go of the wheel and I can't see anything bent, so I
just separated the steering shaft and reinstalled it in the straight
position. The problem is I lost some of my travel to one side and I can't
help but wonder if I really damaged something. Does anybody have any ideas??
Alex.

The cheapest way to get a long travel suspension would be with junkyard
springs that are longer than stock. Yes, this will require welding new
hangars, but I'm sure a competent fabricator/welding shop can do it quickly
and pretty cheap. There's a lot of different springs you can use. 63"
Chevy 1/2 ton rears, Waggy's, YJ's...
If you are really set on using the stock hangars, give
www.allprooffroad.com or www.aor4x4.com a try. They have some good springs,
and AOR's Orbit Eyes are sweet, but all pricey.

I have just put on a 5" lift to my 84 Xtracab. The sales person I bought
the lift from said that I would not need extended lines until I got to 7
inches, but it is clear that I need them now. I have not been able to find
anyone locally who sells these, and I really don't want to pay $100 for a
set of stainless steels. Is there another option? I have heard that you
can relocate the brackets by bending the metal tubing around. Is this a
good option? Is stainless steel needed if you use longer flex hoses?

Thanks for any help.

Hi Toyota folks,
even a seasoned wrench turner as myself forgets things. :-|

My Q is:
"What name brand or generic product is there on the market
to dissolve Thread Locker?"

My application is to free a few stubborn fuel fittings from
Skeletor and Bouncing-Betty's fuel lines. I have tried Liquid Wrench
to penetrate the threads and have had success with one of the fittings.

I am using a fuel line wrench! ;-)
(it took my boogering up a couple of fuel fittings to convince myself
that I needed to add a couple of these valuable tools to my toolbox.)

I have had a friend suggest applying a small amount of oven cleaner to
the fitting to dissolve any thread locker. Has anyone tried this method?
The last time I used oven cleaner to degrease Toyota parts I had a tingling
sensation in my hand.
- (where the oven cleaner made contact with my skin) :-(

Does the Toyota factory apply any type of thread locker,
such as Lock-tite, to the fuel line fittings from the factory?
I welcome all advice from this wonderful Toyota Collective. :^)
Happy Trails,

I've been told that you can take a stock set of brake lines and use those to
add to the ones you've got. Two lengths should be more than enough.

You can extend the brackets, but might put them in
harms way. You can also double up the lines. I went
into my Carquest and looked through books until I
found what I needed.

Sounds like you bent the relay rod, or whatever
controls toe on your truck. Your truck will track
straight, but you will chew tires up fast.

You can also buy a stock length break line and attach it to your existing
line. use a small spring like a carb return line or something to keep the
slack out of the way.
Stock lines are rubber but cheaper.
Good luck

Yeah, I am going to use the main leaf up front, with some leaves from some
toy rears added in for a little lift. I will nead some lift in the back
though, maybe I will use 1" blocks and longer shackles (~2" lift total)

I am not worried about axle wrap, as it is a deisel, and I am selling the truck

Back a looooong time ago, I used to work in a parts store. At that time,
we sold steel brake lines in lengths of around 6" to around 3'. They were
bendible and if you wanted something longer you spliced two together with a
compression fitting. Have things changed so that this approach is no
longer feasible? I guess I should go look at my truck, eh.

The stock front hoses are female by female ends. The rear stock hose is
male by female ends. See a pattern here ?

FWIW I bought all of the adapters, hose, & hose ends (including one
spare of each fitting and spare hose) to do the Sub's brake lines (3 of
them) in -3 from ormebros.com for about $125 this is all Aeroquip or
Goodridge parts, no Russell.

Saw a similar thing on a chevy years ago. The pitman arm was not visibly
bent but the teeth were and it may have popped over a tooth too.

Speaking of front end work (and general pm), since I have some time right
now I am thinking about going through my 86 (72k mi) and doing any basic
front end or preventative maintenance that it might need in the next couple
of years. Looking for the lower cost stuff (<$100 per thing in parts)
fluids get done regular so not including that.

Things I am thinking of and would appreciate input:

1) Front wheel bearings / hubs were just done
2) Idler arm -- will probably go ahead and do the process based on the link
above

3) Pitman arm?
4) Tie rod ends?

5) CV's ? (not really thrilled about tackling these)

6) Old (installed when truck was new) Rancho steering stabilizer that since
I am doing the shocks might do something with. Remove / or replace the
factory? Recommendations on steering stabilizers?

7) Other? (brakes are good and recently flushed the fluid and going to do
the same for the clutch -- though it is only about a two years old).

Thanks, John

i have allot of noise on my rebuilt head still, i know the valves
are adjusted precisely to the manual specs, is it ok to run them
tighter, if so, how much. also i was considering the possiblility
of wear on the rocker shafts. anyone have any ideas? thanks.

add another stock set of lines to your existing ones, cheap if not free.

Bought all of mine that way, with the right ends already on them... 'bout
three bucks a pop.

If you would hae followed the link to the Loctite page I posted, you would find their thread locker solvent in good old MEK
(methlyene chloride - a.k.a. paint stripper).

Just to confirm, this is the date that has been set. If you are even
thinking about going let me know so I've got some idea of how many
might be going.

There are showers in the Ghost Town campgrounds. I don't normally camp
there, but we could. LEt's hear what people think.

BTW, using a compression fitting in brakes is not a good idea. It's not
that they won't seal or hold the pressure. It's that they are not as
robust as AN/JIC 37* fittings or Inverted Flare Fittings. In other
words they won't continue to hold the pressure. Inverted Flare couplers
are available.
