TOY: Previous fuel injection question - update

Few weeks ago I ask the group about the local quickie lube place
recommendation of a "$59.95, but $10 off it you do it do today" fuel
injection cleaning service and most that responded said do it your self
with a gas additive. It was having trouble starting at the time but after a
tank with Berrymans it is starting fine. Did the plugs, wires, dist cap /
rotor at the same time but things did not improve until a little over 1/2
tank with the cleaner.

Wonder how often I should use this stuff? -- 86 22RE, 70k miles.

Since this truck does not get driven that much should I be using a fuel
stabilizer? Recommendations?

Thanks,
John

Hello,

I just bought a 85 standard pickup with a 22R. When
adjusting my timing I noticed that it is about 3-4
degrees advanced with the distributor retarded all the
way. What could cause this? Is it possible that the
PO put the distributor in wrong, or how about the
timing chain?

Thanks,
Greg

How hard is it to straighten out? I would appreciate
any advice.

Not too hard. Pull the number one plug. Turn the
crankshaft pulley until the pison just starts to go
down, then back to perfectly top dead center. Pull the
distributor out, move it until the rotor is pointing
right where you want it. The rotor will turn as you
engage it with the helical cut gear. You might have to
install it a couple of times until the rotor is right
where you want it when the distributer is all of the
way down. You will have to set the timing when you are
done, of course.
This is generic advice as I have not had a 22R
distributer out in a long time, but it should get you
there.
I would grab the crankshaft pulley and turn it while
watching the distributer rotor. If the engine turns
much in either direction without the distributor
turning, you need a new timing chain. I have seen
these chains wipe out the head when they break and get
wrapped up in the chain guide. If you need a chain i
would reccomend a set of gears and a guide assembly as
well.

Good luck

TB

Eric put a few dents in Kelly's clean '01 Tacoma in Big Bear. Not really
bad, but still hard on Kelly (her first body damage).
Me on the other hand, I went up to Gorman this weekend with those 2 and
JR. I got even more body damage, crumpled my cat, muffler and tubing,
swirled the driveshaft, broke another taillight, ripped a front corner light
off, and folded my front license plate in half, then ripped it off!--:) I
was quite surprised I didn't pop a CV joint.

Any ideas on where for 28-29th? I *might* be able to make it. If my IFS
doesn't brake or get cut off by then, I'll probably make it. I think I'm
gonna get a new job where I don't work weekends. Shoot me an email when you
guys get it figured out.

"Since this truck does not get driven that much should I be using a fuel
stabilizer? Recommendations?"

I recommend to everyone to use Chevron fuel. I can't say enough good
things about Techron. Especially if you are worried about leaving it parked
for a while.
