My original question was what is the widest tire you can put on a stock rim
(15x6 I think)? Well, the consensus as far as the answer goes is 10.50
wide. My new question is that the tire shops are telling me I need a wider
rim to accommodate the 10.50 wide tire. They are saying I need a 7 or 8"
rim and that they recommend an 8". They are saying that the 6" rim will
cause distortion of the tread (rounding) and cause it to wear down the
center faster. Has anyone out there ran this setup (15x6 with 10.50 wide
tires)? I know that Roger Brown said that they were good for him.

Just yesterday my next door neighbor was talking about putting 10.5's on
his truck. I look at his stock 6" rims and said don't do it, but he said
the tire shop said it would be ok. Most shops say you need 7" or larger.
BFG recommends 7-9" for 10.5x31's.
I have BFG AT's on both 7" & 8" rims. They have worn fine on the 7" for 16k
miles, but don't think I would put them on 6".
Unless you have factory aluminum or other rims you really want to keep, I
would get an inexpensive set of AR steel wheels in 8" (that is what I did).

Happy? Hmmm, that is probably not the best term.
My truck is on 33x12.5 with 4.10s and I don't really mind it - but I
wouldn't say I am happy. I am not re-gearing until I get an electric for
the rear though, which will be followed by 35s.
For long trips it kind of sucks - especially with a headwind or when you are
going up steep grades. For traffic and around town driving though, you
don't really notice it. I prefer the truck to my car in traffic actually...
and my truck is Man. where my car is Auto.
I think it varies depending on how you have it loaded down and how you have
the engine running. I have a heavier bed, 3" Steel Nerfs, 4" Rear Bumper,
and a big ugly steel front bumper. My engine is fresh though and it runs
pretty well... I can hit 85 on a flat with no headwind - if I am feeling
particularly stupid. Other than that, I can cruise at 70 no problem, and
lose a little speed on the uphills
HTH.

So.. I've been plotting and planning on how to fit my V6 (4.30 diff) with
32 or 33's. She's kind of a slug already, so I'm certainly wasn't
expecting zippy. This email thread is all 22re's, right?
Will I be all good with 32's or 33's on my truck?

I ran 32" BFG muds with 4.10's on my stock '85 22re
with a header and 200K+ miles. Takeoffs were slow but
that didn't bother me much. I lost lots of speed
going up Interstate overpasses, sometimes even had to
downshift to 4th for overpasses ;^). Forget about
passing anybody on a 2 lane hwy unless you've got room
as far as you can see. Could run at 75-80 on flat
roads, but that was basically running all out. Did I
mention I lost speed rapidly on any sort of grade?

The electric locker uses the same gears as the regular
8" V6 differential, so if your gears will fit in that
then they will fit in the e-locker.
If your gears are for the 4-cylinder diff, I think
they will still work, you'll just have to shim the
pinon a bit.
However, 4.56 gears will work better with 32" tires
than 4.30's, and you can order the e-locker straight
from Toyota with 4.56 gears installed... no gear setup
required!

I have never heard anyone address front-end alignment issues on this list.
Do you guys do that yourselves, or do you bring it to "any old regular shop"
to do alignments. I have an '84 and it was done last about 10 years ago. I
think I have noticed some irregular wear on the tires. Is there a way to
check this on your own? Can you do the job yourself? Does the fact that it
is a 4x4, or the fact that it has a 5" spring lift with a drop drag link
pose any challenges or extra costs when either doing the alignment job
yourself or at a shop?
Thanks for your help,
Pat

I'm currently running 33's under my V6 truck with stock gears. But my stock
gears are 4.56's. It had 31's when I bought it, and I felt no differences
from stepping up to 33's. It really depends on how much you care about
accelerating on the street.
A buddy of mine has an 80 pickup with the 20r and stock gears (4.10's I
think) on 32's. He's looking at some 33's, too. He gets around just fine.
50-55mph up grades. He'd rather spend the money on dual cases.
Now I wonder what it would be like if I kept my stock gears when I put the
37's/38.5's on??? hehehe!

It's bad enough running 4.10's and 31's. I can't imagine it with 33's or
bigger.

I have 4.56 gears and run 31" in the summer and
235/85R16 in the winter (32"-33").
Id prefer 4.88s in the winter.
Its a slug taking off, but better at highway speed.
IMHO - dont run 4.10's and 33"

I've run both 33x9.50 and 33x10.50 on my 15x6 stock rims. I do find I need to run them on the road at fairly higher pressures,
35-40 psi to get rid of the squishy sidewalls (these narrow tires are rated to 50 psi). They do wear a little more in the
center of the tread, but a monthly (or more frequent) trip off road, aired down, will cure that :-) In fact I like to preserve
the side lugs for when I go wheeling. I got around 30K miles out of the 33x9.50 MTs, they were still useable but a bit sketchy
for snow runs, so I went to the 33x10.50 AT/KOs.
Find a different tire shop that will mount them up. A 33x10.50 on 6" rim is no different than 33x12.50 on 8" (4.5"
difference). I've even run 33x15.50 on 10" rims (5.5" difference) w/o problems.

Two things here.... My Electric locker came with 4.30's (not 4.375's or
whatever they are) you may not have to do anything with the gears to make it
work in other words.
The other thing is, if i recall from a write-up, that the shim you have to
use on 4cyl gears in a v6 diff is substantial.. something like 1/4 inch. If
it were me I'd not consider this because the stock setup has the pinion
really close to the bearing which makes it mostly shear strength which holds
it together, hanging the pinion out a 1/4 inch greatly increases the forces
on a pinion which is already weaker than the v6 and therefore weaker than a
4cyl pinion in a stock situation.
but its up to you.

I noticed no significant problems putting 31x10.50R15's on my stock steel
15x6" rims. You get a bit more sidewall flex offroad and no adverse road
handling characteristics. Not to mention the steel rims make great hi lift
point.

In theory you can do an alignemnet on a FLAT concrete
floor. And some string. And a Ruler. Turn plates help.
A caster/caber guage makes it even faster/easier.
I tried it once. Spent 1-2 hours with jackstands and
string and go nowhere.
The "good" shops that I go to charges by the actual
adjustment. Makes sense to me. It was something like
$25 to get it squared on the machine. $5 each tie rod
(each side), $20 per camber etc... Unless it was
totally out of wack - it was less than the $99+ that
seems to be the case at most shops.
You just want a shop that knows what they are doing
when faced with a lift.
Many shops have a tech that "follows the instructions"
on the computer screen- whic of couse has no idea of
what to do with respect to the lift.
However - in theory - the lift does not change the
alignment settings. toe is toe no matter how big the
tire is etc...
Big lifts on IFS may not allow full adjustment as the
bolts may not have enough "slide" room.

I looked at one of the pages you have and can see where you got that
information - but this seems like it might be more accurate.
It is from Tacomas but I would be willing to bet they are similar.
The 4.56 seems like a more likely ratio in any case.
The second A seems to point to a 7.5" Ring gear at either site. If I come
up with anything more definitive, I will be sure to pass it along.

Yeah, I wouldn't get the 4-cyl gears for the V6 diff
either, but as I understand it, all but one or so of
the aftermarket gear companies do just that.

I have 3 IFS hubs if anybody needs them. Actually I have the complete upper
and lower A-Arm assemblies with hubs, rotors, calipers, axles-except for a
broken driver's side axle-very easy fix especially with the whole assembly
off the truck. I have a red hard top off of an 86 4Runner-decent shape. I
also have 3.55's out of my Dodge's Dana 60's (f+r). These are the stock
Mopar parts-not aftermarket. Lemme know if anybody wants this stuff or
knows of anyone who does. I'm located in Nashville. Make me an offer.
I'll sell or trade, I don't really care.
As long as ya got somethin cool. Oh yeah, anybody want a mountain bike?
I've got a GT Backwoods, aluminum, front suspension, head set, racing rims,
different bottom bracket I think, purple. Unfortunately I don't remember
what Shimano components it has. I've ridden this bike for years and have
just gotten out of riding. It actually rides really well-very forgiving.
Lemme know.

Heh Good Point - didn't think of that - all I found was conflicting
information.
I would send your VIN and Axle Code to Jay Mark's and ask them if they can
help. They have always been very helpful with me...

I can't see how Toyota would put a 2 pinion in a V6 Locking Diff though....

I meant that the second A seems to point to a 2-Pinion Open set... I don't
know how I got 7.5 out of that.
Sorry about that.

Does anybody know what the newer axle codes are. I have checked some posted
websites that have older axle codes, however I can't seem to find any info
on the 3rd generation 4Runners axles.
http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/other/4_axles.html
The above page has some info, but not enough.
http://www.brian894x4.com/Gearratiosanddiffs.html
The above page has a bit more, but not on Toyotas built in Japan.
Being that my VIN starts with JT, I know my rig was buit in Japan,
and the above pages do not have any info on the 4Runner axle codes buit in
Japan. Anybody know.....
My axle code is: A04A
>From this I have found that
A = 138mm diameter
04 = 3.556 Ring & pinion ratio
A = I don't know
I can't seem to find anything on this code. Anybody know anything????

i run 33's on my 92 wirh 22re and 410's. I bought the truck like
this and it is definately slow, it is ok on the highway but you
have to downshift alot. its ok on the interstate if you dont live
in the mountains but id advise to get some 488's, thats my plan
atleast. also without changing the gears it makes the speedo and
odometer read slow by about 18%.
