Re: TOY: Tried this b4, trying again. West Coast Trips.

I'm open for the first weekend in December, but the second weekend, I'll be
a bit too drunk to wheel. That's the weekend I retire from the Nav.

If'n anyone is going to consider the Fright night run, then that decision
should be made soon. They're limiting it to 125 vehicles and there's no
onsite registration.

Just about finished with my flat bed. The factory bed
was rusted through clean to the upper bed lip.
The frame is bobbed just after the springs.
The main frame is 1 1/2 square tube with 1" risers.
The bed is an old 2" maple butcher block workbench. It
should hold up.
The cab needed some rust repair on the floor in the
rear corners, but otherwise is in very good condition.
I probably won't fix the fender corners any time soon.
The 22R has 125K on it, but I checked the oil
yesterday after a 600 mile trip and the oil was so
golden it was hard to see on the dipstick.
The synchros on 2nd are a bit worn, but it shift nice
otherwise and the transfer and axles work well.
All together, I'm really happy with the truck.
Unfortunaely, due to a job change I might have to sell
it. I hope not.

When getting my inspection sticker a couple of weeks ago, the quicky lube
around the corner said I needed a fuel injection cleaning. Regularly $59
but if I did it today they would offer me $10 off -- would only take 5min
too. From his description it sounded like the old fashion carburetor
cleaner. What about $5 a can?

Well truck has been getting harder and harder to start over the past week.
Always started before with the first turn of the key but now takes a couple
or more. Spits and sputters for a while after it cranks too. After that
runs fine. I have been driving it regularly for the past two weeks but
before that it was only driven once or twice a month the last year and
always started fine. Plugs are about a year old, but thinking of doing
them, wires, and the distributor parts.

Looking for general comments on the fuel injection "service", what may be
the cause of the hard starting, and other general pm? Truck is an 86, 70k,
sat much of it's life but has been started regularly over the past year,
did front bearings and flushed the brakes last week -- clutch too about a
year ago.

Thanks, John

That was what I was remembering -- that truly was the "other list". Been
off this one for a while too so may not be up to date. Glad to be back though.

I would be interested in a more general 4x4 list too. I am on
http://www.offroadlist.com
which is ok. Any Texans out there with list or other info pertaining to
this area?

Did you let them do it? They might have just tried cleaning out your intake
and fouled the spark plugs in the process... or the injectors for that
matter.

I have a '99 4Runner with the Aluminum wheels 7x16JJ. I will have to
remeasure my backspacing, maybe it was 4.75" backspacing......

What vehicle are we talking about? (year, model, etc.)

The 16x7 alloys that came on my T100 had about 4.5" of backspacing. It
seems to me that almost all Toys with IFS ('86-2000+) have come with wheels
using this backspacing. Most aftermarket wheels usually have less
backspacing.

You're right, wheels with more backspacing than you already have would
probably give you more rubbing problems on the frame and control arm...
you'd probably want wheels with LESS backspacing to fix that, but then you
may also be more apt to rub the firewall, etc...

Hi John,
the 5$ cleaner should not hurt. (that's your call)
You may want to replace the fuel filter.
(if it has not been replaced in the last 60k miles)

No, been out of wrenchin for a while but knew better than to fall for that.
When I took my pathfinder in a few months ago they were nice enough to
replace the wiper blades, $20. Toy and the girlfriends car got new ones
before they went in for inspection. Pep-Boys is a heck of a lot cheaper.

Did put a new tank of fuel in it right before the problem started -- just
thought of that. Not really expecting the plugs / distributor stuff because
my problems with that in the past have been after the truck was running.
Going to replace them anyway, but should I do the driveway version of the
injector cleaning (and what would that be)?

Thanks, John

Fuel injection service is a big rip-off. Buy a bottle of Gumout. As for the
hard starting, my 85 was doing this a while ago too. I replaced a few things
(like you I tried plugs, wires, cap) but it turned out to be a dirty (VERY)
throttle-body and Throttle Position Sensor, which I cleaned both and
readjusted the TPS. Also replaced the fuel injection fuel damper, which was
leaking. I really had 2 related problems I was trying to fix, hard start and
off-throttle surge. Anyway, now the surge is gone and it starts with a touch
of the key.

I agree the knee jerk reaction is to get fuel injectors
cleaned when the real source of drivability problems
is usually something else.

I have been using premium gas for 412,000 miles and never
experienced a fuel system problem like plugged injectors. I just
manually clean the throttle body plate and bore at every tune up
with carburetor cleaner and a toothbrush. I also change the EFI fuel
filter every 30-50,000 miles.

Do you usually buy gas from the place you got it from?
Do you live in the south?

Water in gas would cause that, and I have seen lots of water in gas before.
Only in the south where I grew up, and only from "Questionable" gas
stations.

My Dad was always real picky about the gas stations because of his boat.

It is a shot in the dark, but it is possible.

decent gas should give you proper cleaning of your
injectors - but if they get dirty Gumout is WAY
different than the super powerfull stuff that GM uses
and that I use. It is pressurized and run through the
engine instead of fuel. It's nasty stuff. I only use
it when an injector is plugged or stuck open because
of some chunk of crap in there. It's not a maintenance
thing.
The big problem around here (Chicago) is all of the
alcohol in the gas is eating the insulation on the
injector windings, especially on the Vortecs. Dumping
a bunch of Gumout in your tank every oil change
probably doesn't help that issue.
The throttle body cleaning is a maintenance thing and
is often needed, but that's a whole different kind of
thing.

Just my .02

I would check plug gaps, Dist. cap, check timing and
pull any efi codes. If its been a long time change
the fuel filter as a prev. maint. item.

I did. It was a personal disagreement with pjc that drove me to sever
all ties with ORC. That, and a need to cut down on email volume caused
me to choose to stay on this list. Five lists was too many.

Forgot the filter today but got plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. Guy at the
parts place recommended, and I bought, Berryman injector cleaner and B-12
chemtool. Have about half a tank right now so thought I would add it to
that, run it a few miles at the stronger mix then fill the tank to let the
rest go through more diluted. Thoughts on that from anyone? Thanks.

BTW, Now a turncoat. Bought a Dodge 4x4 today. In my defence it is to wear
it out and keep the miles off the Toy. The others are disposable but
keeping the Toyota till I dye.
