RE: TOY: 86 4runner turbo

Want to get real trick with turbo shut-down solutions? Turbo City (I think)
sells a 6-QUART dry-sump oiler for the turbo that feeds cool engine oil to
the turbo AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTS DOWN (With no oil pressure)... it feeds oil
to the turbo through a one-way pressure valve that opens when oil pressure
drops to a certain limit, and the oil flows pretty slowly, definetely long
enough to last until the turbo stops spinning. Remember turbos spin around
100,000 RPM and it takes a while for the turbo to stop spinning. When you
start the engine again the sump re-fills from the engine oil pump.

Learned all about turbos and heat when I owned a Porsche turbo in Arizona...
sold it after I destroyed the third turbo. Of course it could have had
something to do with a bypassed fuel-pump cutoff due to a weak wastegate
spring... NAAAH!

Oh yea, outright the VW's turbo ran me $600 with a pyrometer and a tach
included.
I would get a pyrometer for any turbo'd engine. Hot shut downs are
usually what kills a turbo. HKS used to make a 'turbo timer', it would
let the engine idle for a set period of time after the key was turned
off. This allowed the turbo to cool down with continued oil pressure.

MR. MICHEAL OKONTA( B.Sc.,M.Sc. MNIM.)
DIRECTOR, PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION
EMAIL ADDRESS:dom_domingos@email.com

STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL & URGENT

ATTENTION:Chairman/Ceo

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am Mr. Micheal Okonta a native of Cape Town in
South Africa and I am an Executive Accountant with
the South Africa Department of Mining & Natural
Resources. First and foremost, I apologized using this
medium to reach you for a transaction/business of this
magnitude, but this is due to Confidentiality and
prompt access reposed on this medium. Be informed that
a member of the South Africa Export Promotion Council
(SEPC) who was at the Government delegation to your
country during a trade exhibition gave your enviable
credentials/particulars to me. I have decided to seek
a confidential co-operation with you in the execution
of the deal described Hereunder for the benefit of all
parties and hope you will keep it as a top secret
because of the nature of this transaction.

Within the Department of Mining & Natural Resources
where I work as an Executive Accountant and with the
cooperation of four other top officials, we have in
our possession as overdue payment bills totaling
Forteen Million, Two hundred Thousand US. Dollars
($14,200,000.) which we want to transfer abroad with
the assistance and cooperation of a foreign
company/individual to receive the said fund on our
behalf or a reliable foreign non-company account to
receive such funds. More so, we are handicapped in the
circumstances, as the South Africa Civil Service Code
of Conduct does not allow us to operate offshore
account hence your importance in the whole
transaction.

This amount $14.2m represents the balance of the total
contract value executed on behalf of my Department by
a foreign contracting firm, which we the officials
over-invoiced deliberately.

Though the actual contract cost have been paid to
the original contractor, leaving the
balance in the tune of the said amount which we have
in principles gotten approval to remit by Key tested
Telegraphic Transfer (K.T.T) to any foreign bank
account you will provide by filing in an application
through the Ministry of Justice here in South Africa
for the transfer of rights and privileges of the
former contractor to you.

I have the authority of my partners involved to
propose that should you be willing to assist us in
the transaction, your share of the sum will be 30% of
the $14.2 million, 60% for us and 10% for taxation and
miscellaneous expenses. The business itself is 100%
safe, on your part provided you treat it with utmost
secrecy and confidentiality. Also your area of
specialization is not a hindrance to the successful
execution of this transaction. I have reposed my
confidence in you and hope that you will not
disappoint me. Endeavor to contact me immediately
through my email address above to
confirm whether or not you are interested in this
deal. If you are not, it will enable me scout for
another foreign partner to carry out this deal. I
want to assure you that my partners and myself are
in a position to make the payment of this claim
possible provided you can give us a very strong
Assurance and guarantee that our share will be secured
and please, remember to treat this matter very
confidential , because we will not comprehend with any
form of exposure as we are still in active Government
Service .Once again, remember that time is of great
essence in this transaction.

I wait in anticipation of your fullest co-operation.

Yours faithfully,

MICHEAL OKONTA.

Well - while the Taurus SHO engine was a Yamaha engine
(or at least they had a hand in it), there is probablu
a far easier Toyota Truck swap - an 18RG.

>From what I understand it was basically a 22RE with a
twin cam head.

Parts are harder to come by, but I thought the lower
block was the same?

It was sorta popular a while back but I think its
sorta an old school thing these days.

Personally - if I was to do all that work, Id go with
a more modern twin cam design (such as a Taco motor),
or do the Supra turbo thing.

This is a known scam. For my full time Job, I work for an internet service
provider. When I recieved my first one of these, which by the way came to
my inbox, addressed to me, I printed it out, and called the FBI to tip them
off to it. I guess i should have known that they already knew about it, and
believe it or not, the Secret Service is actively pursuing this. Just and
FYI

Those are called "Accusumps" and are also sold by Moroso. Canton I
believe is the originator. They work just like the reservoir on a
reservoir shock. Cylinder with dry nitrogen (hopefully not air) on one
side of a floating piston, engine oil (in this case) on the other. They
come with either a manual valve or a solenoid valve. They were
originally developed to counter low pressure in high G turns while road
racing.

I used the pyrometer to determine when to turn the engine off. If the
pyro showed too hot, I let it idle until it was cool enough. Talk to
whomever you get the turbo from for a shut-down temp recommendation.
All turbos use the engine oil for cooling. Some also have a water
jacket shared with the engine's cooling system.

Here is a good page on turbo
trucks and 4runner.

http://www.well.com/user/mosk/

It has some info on using a different
type of turbo besides stock one.

I am thinking of swapping in a rear end with an electric locker from a
junkyard, since I've always wanted a locker and my rear end has problems, it
might be just as easy to put in another one.

What rear ends will fit under an 88 4runner? What all trucks came with
an electric locker?

How are rear ends measured? I measured mine from the inside bottom of
the hub, but need to know how they are usually measured.

How can I tell if a rear end is any good? I know to check the play on
the input (pinion) shaft for excessive play in side to side, thrust, and
rotational movement. What else should I look for in picking one out of a
junkyard?

My rear axle has been blowing pinion seals about monthly since I
bottomed out on my driveshaft, so I think the berrings that the pinion ride
on are destroyed (I'm not completely familiar with the innards of a diff
yet). Also the driver side axle seal has begun to leak, and I'm sure it
could use new wheel berrings too. As well as a new wheel cylinder, shoes,
and the drums turned but it looks to have been turned before and I don't
know yet if it can be turned again.

All replies welcome :) ,

Other things you can do are to forward the entire message w/ full headers to "abuse@ISP" where ISP is the e-mail provdier
(@EMAIL.COM in this case) that sent the letter. I've had good luck getting these jokers acounts closed, Yahoo is pretty good
about shutting them down. Also, see this:

	http://www.treas.gov/usss/alert419.shtml

I forward copies all all these e-mail to the Treasury Dept.:
	mailto:419.fcd@usss.treas.gov

Mark the message with the words "No Loss" if you are simply reporting the scam.

when i crank my engine after its sat a while, it makes a strange
sound that sounds similar to lifters that are oil starved (real
rattley), and it goes away in about 2 seconds. i was wondering if
this could be the tensioner for the timing chain. what do you
listen for when the timing chain is going bad? the truck has
175000 miles on it. thanks for any help.

You need to physically insect your drivers side chain
guide http://www.mindspring.com/~cherubini/chainguide.JPG

If the guide is intact then there is nothing to worry about.
The 22R is famous for making rackety sounds at
start up.

Could be a timing chain going bad... or it could be standard 22R valve train
noise.

Best bet, is to yank your valve cover (1/2 Banana) and look down the front
of the timing chain cover at the guides with a flashlight. If the chain is
loose then it is a pretty good assumption that those guides will be pretty
eaten up.

Keep an eye out for damage to the water passages in the cover also.

I have a writeup on my website carterman.netfirms.com
about installing an electric locker in my '87 axle
housing. You can also swap in the entire Tacoma rear
axle, but you'll have to do some slight mods to the
brake line routings.

Aside from the obvious, I am not sure what to look
for. If you pull the 3rd member (differential) you can
visually inspect the gears. Try and grab as much of
the wiring harness as you can.
