Actually, what I've found is that in Panamint it's just the opposite.
There's a lot to do and see. It's just so very spread out that getting
to the beginning of the trail can take a good chunk out of the day.
Just

If you camp at Ballarat (something like $2/day) it keeps Louie solvent
so that he can continue to be there and it keeps the cab-over chainsaw
noise and dust to a minimum. There is also a shower available from
Louie for a small fee. Like Mike said though, there are nicer places to
camp. Most of them will increase the drive time to another destination
though.
Regarding Suprise Canyone, I was at

Stone and Ishim Cyn's may need a winch depending on the vehicle &
circumstances. Ishim in particular is a serious trail (read approaching
Hammer class from what I've seen of it), Stone is a dead end and there
is a go-around if you're headed from Lookout City so you don't have to
run the last two dry waterfalls to get there.

I'll go for that. Mike, you've now been out there enough to co-lead
this. HA ! shanghai'd.
Next we need a date.

Greetings!
I recently bought an 86 4runner ( owned an 85 previously) I THOUGHT I got
the truck for an amazing price just needed a headgasket and timing
chain/guides but after fixing all that and getting it running pretty well
the turbo went out. Now it sounds very bad and I can hear it rattling
around in the case. Basically, I am wondering what my options are at this
point. There is no way I can afford (orr want to) pay $1200+ for a new
turbo. Can I get a rebuild kit or something? What do others do in this
situation? The truck only has 125,000 miles on it and the body is in pretty
good shape.
Thanks

There are several turbo rebuilders out there, Turbo City comes to mind. Do
a search and make some calls, should be about $4-500 max. :)

Hi Will,
first decide do you want to keep the Turbo or go with another engine?
Personally I have not worked on turbo vehicles, (wait; take that back),
do Turbo U.S. Military Duce and a half's count? :-)
Generally, (only from what I've heard), so remember this is "hear-say"
that Toyota Turbo units are very pricey to have repaired or replaced.
You might try locating another Turbo here is a potential source
online http://www.junkyarddog.com/ and maybe this one too...
I am getting closer with my 3.0L Toyota v-6 engine swap into my 1984
Toyota 4Runner, however that may not be an option for you. A neighbor's
friend just completed a 289 engine swap into a 1987 Toyota 4wd pick up.
Again, you will need to make a decision either to R&R the Turbo or
consider the engine swap option.
Hey,
if you are anywhere near North Alabama I will help 'ya turn a few wrenches!
Just remember you do have many options out there and Don't let someone try
talking you into selling your 4Runner for dirt! There are many engine swap
options out there *if* you decide to go with an engine swap. :^)
Good Luck,

I seem to recall that there is an AiResearch upgrade turbo out there.
I bought the turbo for my VW diesel Ribbit truck from company in
Shingle Springs, CA. Talked to Dobie and I was real impressed with his
knowledge of turbos. Wish I could remember the company name. I'd call
Tim @ DOA engines (Link off of All-Pro's page) and talk to him about
it, I seem to recal he knew about the upgrade turbo.

Oh yea, outright the VW's turbo ran me $600 with a pyrometer and a tach
included.
I would get a pyrometer for any turbo'd engine. Hot shut downs are
usually what kills a turbo. HKS used to make a 'turbo timer', it would
let the engine idle for a set period of time after the key was turned
off. This allowed the turbo to cool down with continued oil pressure.
