Last time I suggested a list trip Mike Carter was the only one to
respond. Pretty pathetic, so I'm trying it one last time. An EB list
I'm on (& I no longer own one) generated 11 trucks on a trip led by a
guy driving a Yota & they had 14 for a Hundry Valley OHV run last
weekend.
So, Who's interested in a trip and where to ?
I can offer to lead at these places:
Panamint Valley
Calico Area
El Pasos/Last Chance Canyon

I'd like to go as well but am also having vehicle trouble. Having
trouble with a new ATK engine which I wrote about previously. Its back
with the mechanic for the third time. This is really ruining my summer.
I noticed you're in ventura, what about Gorman? I drove past there
yesterday in the work truck. Boy was I tempted to take that 2 wheel
drive ranger for a workout....... ;-)

Quite honestly I find Gorman boring. It's great place to take a group
of people who are new to the sport, gives them a chance to safely find
their own comfort limits. That was the thrust of last weekend's EB list
trip. For me, there isn't anything new to see. It's 'canned' 4
wheeling, all of the trails have been done and the scenery never really
changes.
Close Gorman are some trails that aren't any more challenging that do
have scenery changes. There's a cliff up in the Ponderosa Pines you can
drive to in 2wd that looks out over the central valley clear across to
Bakersfield and on up 178 to Lake Isabella and up 58 to Tehachapi. If
it's clear. There are two easily driven to mtn peaks that have multiple
vistas in various directions. There is one trail that is challenging
for near stock rigs when dry and challenging for big dogs when wet.
There are many other trails that go interesting places that aren't
over-run with cab-over chainsaw riders.

Boy, I feel special! Thom, I have a few friends who
aren't on this list who would most likely join us.
I would love to do some more exploring in Panamint.
I'd like to check out Last Chance Canyon as well.
Calico is always fun, but I go out there several times
a year as it is.
So, let's plan a trip!

Got to thinking that b4 I turn people off on going to Gorman, it isn't
so much that Gorman is bad. It's just that I know there is so much more
to see and do in the immediate area. If a list trip to Gorman
materializes I will show up.

There are many good undesignated and unmarked trails with heaps of rocks to
crawl over in the Frazier Park area as well.

Was just curious if anyone had either heard of or explored the possibility
of putting the High Output Yamaha V6 which was put in the old Taurus SHO's
into a truck... I don't have any specs on torque or horsepower on those
things so it is simply because of the cool factor of having a truck 'Yamaha
powered'....

There were a lot with manuals, so flywheels and
clutches shouldn't be a problem, but they were all
front drivers, so the adaption would have to be at the
bellhousing or the engine would have to be in the bed.
Cool idea though I think you should try it and let us
all know how it turns out 8*)

Speaking of Panamint, you all do know that surprise canyon is closed right?
I'm somewhat of an authority on big bear. I can serve as a guide. As
soon as I'm sure my truck is trustworthy again that is.
By the way, they piled a bunch of rocks at the input side of John Bull
(3n10). I've been through there many times without too much trouble but
last time needed spotters and rock stacking to get over and around the
new boulders. Took us like 2 hours to get 5 vehicles over the beginning
of it.
The hill in the middle of the crab flats trail seems to get scarier with
each season. More top soil washes away exposing more rocks. And hey,
what's more fun than picking your way thought jagged rocks that picking
your way though jagged rocks on a steep hill huh???

Yup, know it's closed. Not too long ago there was a BLM meeting for
public input about it's future. I couldn't make it so I've no idea what
the outcome was.
There is a lot to see and do in Panamint w/o having to run Surprise
Cyn, but it is a bit of a haul for a weekend trip.
Big Bear I've been to, but don't have much knowledge of, so TAG, you're
it ! ;)
For a starter trip I think places like Big Bear, Gorman/Frazier area,
or the El Paso Mtns (Red Rock Cyn area) would all be good choices as
they have mild to difficult trails. Calico could also work as it also
has a rnage of trail difficulties. If there is interest in that area
then I highly recommend we go there. It's about 15 minutes east of
Barstow just off I-15.
Let's have some input. So far we have:
Hungry Valley OHV (Gorman)
Gorman/Frazier greater area
El Paso Mtns/Last Chance Cyn
Big Bear
Panamint Valley
Calico
Who's interested in what ?

I'll try just about anything. Since I'm putting the HiLux up on blocks for
my SAS, I'm wheeling the Heep for the time being. I'm a bit leery of
anything too difficult, after all it's a Heep (ok, it's because I've only
made one payment and haven't even got plates yet.) I'm not too sure about
Panamint. Someone told me that you need to be able to winch alot (I'm
winchless). I've done the MJT back on the Backwards Jamboree Bash (Hey we
never did get any t-shirts...), so if we're doing something a bit more
challenging, I'm still ok. I'm coming from the border, so hopefully nothing
too far in distance (i.e. "way north").
