That adjusts the idle up for the A/C. That's what adjusts the RPM's up to
about 1200 when the A/C is on.

That screw adjusts the idle-up RPM when the a/c clutch is engaged. If its
adjusted too high (over 1000rpm's or so), every time you are at a stop
light or something and have your foot on the brake w/ the A/C running, the
engine will surge repeatedly between regular idle and the high-idle when
the compressor is running. Don't ask me why- that's just what it does.
Somebody on one of the BBS's explained why pretty well once, but I
forgot...
Anyway, its the ECU that does it. Just keep the high-idle below 1000 and it
shouldn't happen.

I have a sandpaper noise that happens when I
turn the A/C on. I assume that this is
bearings on the compressor. Or could it
be the clutch. Is the clutch an easy fix?
If it is the bearings I guess that I should just
buy a new compressor or can you rebuild them
yourself?

Sounds like bearing whine to me... more like when a diff is going out maybe,
but I don't see why a bad wheel bearing wouldn't whine like that too. If it
were CVs then I think they would be vibrating or clunking around turns... so
I vote bearing replacement.
Might want to jack the truck up and take a good hold of the tire on that
side and give it a good shake to see if you can feel any lateral play in the
wheel... that should be a pretty good sign.

I have kind of a low pitch noise coming from the front right of my 86 pu.
Pretty constant at anything over 10-15mph and does not seem to really
increase with speed (though it is hard to tell because of the increased
road noise). Same noise with our without hubs locked, braking does not
affect the noise, and turning does not seem to either.
I am kind of guess bearing noise? Just started all of a sudden. Let the
tuck sit overnight and same noise cold this morning.
Think I saw a tech section dealing with front ends. Need to check that out
this evening but wanted to ask for advice from the list too.
Thanks,
John

Thanks to those that offered advice. Have everything pretty much lined up
but the 54mm or 2 1/8" socket.
Trying to decide if I need to plan on replacing the bearings or just repack
them. Know getting it apart will be the deciding factor but should I go
ahead and buy them. 74k on the truck and brakes were done <7k ago (should I
have expected them to repack while they were doing the rotor?).
Hub work while I am doing this? They seem to function pretty smooth but is
there any pm that should be done while things are apart.
Thanks,
John

Friends:
I'm seeking direction on whether it's conceivable to drop in a 3.0 Litre V6
Toyota engine into a Toyota 4Runner that currently has a 2.4 Litre (22R-E)
motor currently installed (from the factory)?
Keep in mind the state of Florida has lifted the smog rules so I can open
this puppy up and have a little fun, which I'd like to do.
Currently based in Orlando (originally from San Diego) for three years now,
I really really miss the So Cal motor scene; though it's pretty good here.
I'm wondering if any of you come across this type of project in your area or
elsewhere. Any and all feedback will certainly be appreciated.
I have a:
1. 1992 Toyota 4Runner SR5 (4-Wheel Drive)
2. 22R-E engine (2.4L)
3. 5-speed manual transmission
I'm definitely planning to keep the vehicle because it's in great shape PLUS
the availability of after-market products is considerable. I want to
sweeten up the motor a bit, and going to a V6 is on my mind but need a
little feedback on determining the feasibility of wiring (electrical
harness), plumbing, and mounts for the engine and transmission. I also want
to beef up the transmission that goes into this project. Again, any and all
feedback will certainly be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation. I'll certainly look forward to
hearing back.
- Jesse
Ps I have experience rebuilding (and building?) small and big-block
performance Chevy engines. I would really like to stay in the realm of
Toyota power plants for this project. I like the idea of keeping this
project somewhat simple by keeping with an engine that will go in nicely.

Looking at the manual for my 81 model truck, it looks like the clutch
bearings can be replaced without removing the compressor from the
vehicle. I've not tried this yet but I plan to. I'm sure there are
other bearings inside the compressor that it could be also.
It may also be leaves or other debris inside the fan box under the dash.
