You don't want to blast the O-ring groove at all. The machined surface
is needed to seal. If you do blast it, you'll want to carefully scrape
it or lap it smooth again.
While you've got the cover off check to see that the water passage
corrosion isn't in danger of eating thru into the crankcase. I would
mask the timing chain region with duct tape and carefully blast the
water passage. If you have any doubt about the corrsion, get another
one or have that one welded up.
Once you have the aluminum parts clean you can spray them with Harley
Engine Case paint if you want to keep the dull aluminum finish w/o the
maintenence.

Silicosis of the lungs comes from sandblasting w/o a respirator. It's
bad news. May as well smoke unfiltered Camels for the damage you're
doing to yourself. Check Grainger's or McMaster-Carr for a proper
respirator.
