Re: TOY: RE: head gasket?

This topic recently came up on the RDC BBS. One guy there had on going
trouble with popping the race truck's gasket. He drilled out the head
and rocker towers to accept a 1/2" bolt, and then tapped the block to
1/2-13. He used Holo-Krome SHCS and torqued them to 103 lbs-ft. Cost a
lot less than the ARP head bolts.
If you elect to cut it yourself, you want a fairly rough finish, not a
mirror.I'm thinking something in the 16 to 20 rms range, but I'd have
to get out my guide to check that I've got the right numbers. Use the
biggest fly cutter you can find. Even better would an insert shell mill
of about 18"-24" in diameter.

CoolŠ lot's of help can be found here.

But, before the barrage of questions, please check the format your sending
the messages in. Your last message came in "HTML" format. The prefered
format is "text". Give the "welcome" email you received from the server a
gander.

Maybe someother "hotmail" user can ring in with the formatting info.

What are the dangers to the drivetrain pulling someone out in reverse? I
generally avoid doing this figuring the drivetrain was designed to
withstand the most force in forward, but if you had to do it how much could
you expect to be able to tug without braking something? What would likely
break first (stock 86 PU std trans)? Thanks, John

first and foremost are the ping and pinion. since you are using the reverse
face, which from i heard is 30-40% weaker than the drive face...

other than that, the drivetrain is seeing the same forces so, whatever you
broke while pulling someone going forward will also apply... yikes!

>From what I remember, the front R&P normally ride on the coast side of the
gears in forward motion, which is why they are generally considered weaker.
In reverse, the fronts ride on the drive side, and the rears on the coast
side.
This is also why high pinions are stronger. They ride on the drive side in
forward motion.

Now, there are a lot of other variables, like the weight of the engine over
the front R&P, which is probably why they broke in other cases.
