My local dealer quoted my just over $200 to fill the freon in my 4Runner
(R-12), and they quoted my just over $300 to convert it over to R-134a.
This doesn't seem right to me. I can go down to Autozone or Checker and
buy a conversion kit for under $40, and it includes the new fittings, the
charge oil, and freon. Has anyone ever done this conversion? I thought
that all you had to change was the fitting on the compressor, is this
assumption right? Is the dealer trying to screw me with the conversion?
Any input??

I have an '84 pickup. I am not sure what your application is, but I just
converted mine to R-134A and it cost a total of $150, and that included
resetting the gap on my compressor clutch. I think that was $40 of the
total. It would have been $110 without that. Recharging with R-12 will be
significantly higher. Your dealer's price may be high, or labor may be high
in your area. I am in Texas and I got it done at a local auto a/c shop. I
did not check the dealer's price, but all of the a/c shops around here were
comparable to that.

Hey,
So i think i got a busted head gasket on my 22r... It is a rebuild with like
about 30-40 on it.
I've been noticing that my water has been slowly going down. The Rad is new
and is a good modine unitl. Also sometimes if it runs on the highway for a
bit, when i get off, it will have a vicious missfire. Like it will go lump
lump lump.. massive SHUDDER. I also have an oil leak somewhere around the
fuel pump on the side of the motor. Anyone encounter problems such as
these? any advice? any tricks for replacement? If i'm in there is there
anything else i should check for or replace?
I have full access to 2 full machine shops on campus and am a capable
machinist. I am thinking of putting my head up on a bridgeport and taking a
few thou off of it. Anybody have any ideas questions concerns? I was also
thinking of taking my head and opening up the ports alittle, just a cleaning
for burrs and stuff. Opening them too much would be pretty dumb as the
motor is stock.
Thanks guys

Yes....while your in there I would think about doing the timing set. If it's
EFI I would also replace the fuel filter just because it's so much easier
with the head off.

Hey,
So i think i got a busted head gasket on my 22r... It is a rebuild with like
about 30-40 on it.
I've been noticing that my water has been slowly going down. The Rad is new
and is a good modine unitl. Also sometimes if it runs on the highway for a
bit, when i get off, it will have a vicious missfire. Like it will go lump
lump lump.. massive SHUDDER. I also have an oil leak somewhere around the
fuel pump on the side of the motor. Anyone encounter problems such as
these? any advice? any tricks for replacement? If i'm in there is there
anything else i should check for or replace?

Check it for flatness first. If it's anything close to .010", I'd get it
heat straightened first before you surface it. I wouldn't want to take off
that much metal.

"R134a attacks the nitrile butyl rubber refrigeration hoses and 0-ring gaskets"
used in R12 systems. This is a direct quote from an official Toyota
AC technician training manual I have.
On AC discussion forums I follow, the AC mechanics report that R134a
conversions on Toyotas last 2 years or less before they start leaking
or expensive components fail. Using R134a compressor oil did
NOT prevent system failures.
They all strongly recommend sticking with R12 which is widely
available on ebay for only $20 a can (a fully discharged system needs
no more than two 14 oz cans). Example of ebay ad:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1840643317
Also, for $15 anyone can take a 25 question open book test online
at http://www.macsw.org/ to become certified to buy R12
and charge a PARTIALLY discharged R12 system yourself like this:
http://www.mindspring.com/~cherubini/ACrecharge.JPG
But beware that before charging a FULLY discharged R12 system
the receiver-drier needs to be replaced and a few ounces of Nippondenso
R12 compressor oil added and the system hooked
up to a vacuum pump for 30 minutes to remove system
moisture.
I own a 1974 Toyota Corona and a 1976 Toyota pickup
with their original R12 systems that still work great. The only
service they have needed is a topping off of 1/2 - 3/4 can of R12
refrigerant. This is a testimonial to the tremendous durability of
an R12 system.

i heard that some dont even need charging. just run the system once a week for a
short period, each week, for the rest of the lifetime of the car and you should be
fine.
personally, on my 90, other than the SSC which i dont thing toyota did anything
since everything was fine on mine, hasnt been for a/c service. sure it's not as
cold as my WRX and its r134, but it still gets cold enough for me... :)
