TOY: Well, now I done it......

Get paid today. Get to turn it into cash and spend it all in one place.
Last Friday I gave a guy a deposit on a near virgin 85 Xtra Cab with
EFI. He's selling because it doesn't run. Said it acted like it was
running out of fuel with 1/8 tank in it, the check engine light came
on, and then it just stopped. No sounds of the pump priming the system,
but it does crank. I'm gambling that it set a code.
There are two small dents in it, bed has never been used to haul
anything more than dogs. Comes with a color matched shell. No rust to
be seen anywhere in the bed.
It's kind of a strange truck. It's a striper, rubber floor mats, split
bench seat, low end gauge cluster, no clock, etc., but it has an auto
trans and the double walled bed. I'm not sure what I'm going to do
about the auto trans. I can't decide if this is the daily driver or
will replace Patch. Or if I'll fix it and sell it at market value.

The Marlin doubler that was put in my friend's since-sold Supercharged
3.4 T-100 with an auto may be coming my way. Seems the current owner
had a Jiffy Lube type place do all of the lubes and they didn't refill
the front box. Their mechanic is telling them to just put it back to
stock. Things inside the Crawler may not be all that great, but at
least I'd get both adapter plates. If that does come my way, that will
decide this truck's future.

Great find... you probably already know, but it sounds like it just needs a
fuel pump. Same thing happened to me, and all I did was replace the bracket
that sits in the tank cause the wireing was FUBAR'ed. Either way it sounds
like a relatively cheap fix.

Good Luck.

Sweet deal Thom! I'm jealous, someday I'd like to find
a good deal on a fixer-upper to make into a more
dedicated trail rig.

On the Mariln case, does it have two fill plugs? My
4-cylinder one only uses the rear fill plug, and the
oil flows forward into the front box. Is the one for
the auto tranny different?

We have to go wheeling again sometime!

Does anyone know the spec's on a Toyota RV camshaft for a 22RE??

I have a LC EFI Pro cam right now, and don't think it gives me enough
Torque on the lower end.
Also, does anyone know of a better spec'd camshaft (reliable one) that will
give me better low end torque? My current one has a 440/440 max.
lift, 280 duration and 230 @ .050

Thanks for the help!!

I am almost positive this is a bad alternator but it shows a couple symptoms
I don't remember seeing on the list before so I figured I would throw it out
to get any feedback.

The wife calls Saturday and says the Battery and Charge light are on. I had
a lot of things on my mind and I said I couldn't remember what specifically
that was but that it wasn't serious (as in, it wasn't the brakes) so I told
her to check the brake fluid to be on the safe side and stay off of the
interstate and highways in case it breaks down.

She said she would be over Sunday night for dinner anyway and asked me to
look at it then. Sunday morning I remembered what those lights pointed to
(the alternator or charging system).

Sunday evening she shows up and says something is really wrong with the
truck now. So, I am like, OK tell me what happened. She says that the
lights have stayed on since Saturday but that the oil pressure gauge dropped
to zero, the charge meter dropped to half way (usually between half way and
maximum), and that the radio started acting weird when she turned the corner
to come to my apartment.

My immediate thought was that the alternator died and she was running on the
battery... when the batter started dieing the electrical system started
winding down and that is where the radio and gauges went wacky.

Would that be the general consensus here as well or am I totally
miss-diagnosing?

Sorry for rambling... I have been accused of adding a lot of extra
information to my missives before...

When the battery and charging light come on
simultaneously it is a classic symptom of a
bad alternator - usually just worn out brushes.

Continued driving with these lights on will cause
the battery to run down.

Installing a new alternator on a vehicle with a run down battery
is hard on the alternator and will void its warranty.

Sounds cool. :)

FYI, the auto in the T100 (A340F) and the auto in the '85 (A340H) are two
different animals. You can't put the Marlin setup on the '85 auto since
its t-case is hydraulic and is basically part of the auto tranny. :(

Check out this article, its got a lot of great info:

You could do a quick test to see if the alternator is putting out. With the
engine running just remove the Negative lead from the battery, if it dies
the alternator is bad, if it keeps running then it is putting out enough for
the engine to keep running.

I will check them, but they aren't that old and there was no belt squeaking.
Belts have maybe 5 or 10K on them and the battery is probably 3 or 4 months
old.

In the event that I do have to replace the Alternator, which I think is
likely. I will fix the core and keep it for a spare if I can.

Which do you think is better: a Duralast Alt or a Rayloc (Raylock?)?

I have never heard of Raylock and the last few cars I replaced the alts on
were Chevy's and I really didn't care what was going in them.

The Raylock is NAPA and the Duralast is Autozone... same price, both with a
3yr.

One more question... can you get one out of an 85 without removing the
coolant pipe?

When I replaced the motor we just hung it out of the way and most of that
section was removed or off to the side by then. I have never had to or
tried to remove it by itself... glancing at the Chiltons for any surprises,
it tells me that I have to drain the fluid and remove the coolant pipe:
which would suck cause it is in downtown parking right now.

When I installed the belts the last time and I was tightening down the
alternator bolts it seemed like it would be pretty easy to remove, but I
didn't actually try it.

on my 84 i had to remove the lower hose, the alt wouldn't come out any

Erik, thanks for the link. I suspected, but didn't know for sure, that
the 85's trans would be different from the V6 trans in the T-100.
It's kinda killing me, I got it home tonight. I can't work on it until
sometime next week as I'm getting ready for the ~500 mile one way trip
to Downieville to go MTBing.
I'll get it running next week and then drive it to work for a couple of
weeks b4 deciding it's future. From the sound of that article it would
cost me about the same to go find a NV3550 and put in there as it would
to get a 340F and since he did a V6, I'm not sure about being able to
swap the b/h btwn a V6 trans and a 4cyl trans.

I've got several potential trips in the works for once things cool off
out there a little. We ought to put together a trip to Calico for the
west coasters on the list. Any takers ?

Thom,
The bellhousings are interchangeable. You would also change over the pan and
dipstick. The A340F is getting a little cheaper than when I did the swap. It
would be a unique rig if you did it. Probably the only solid axle
