I have a '93 4 Runner with V6 and the slug automatic transmission that turns
new fluid brown soon after I change it.

I want to swap out the automatic for a 5spd manual and have put together a
list of items that I will need.

I was wondering if anybody has done this and if there is anything I maybe
missing?

1. 5spd trans (this is obvious)
2. Bell housing
3. Clutch, Pressure plate & Flywheel
4. Clutch pedal assembly
5. Master & Slave cyl.
6. Computer Module

Now I was told I would also have to change the front IFS because of the
automatic locking hubs.

Does this sound right?

Mark

You don't need to change the ECU, and the auto locking hubs don't mean
anything except that you probably want to change them to manual hubs just
because they are better. You may or may not have to modify driveline
lengths, you will probably have to change flanges, the auto uses a different
flange than anything else, not 100% sure. You will have to use a custom
crossmember beause the auto is in a different place than the manual.

The hubs have nothing to do w/ the tranny- completely separate issue.

In case you didn't already know, you'll also need the transfer case that
comes w/ the manual tranny.

Correct, the FSM does not have the narrative of the
other manuals, however it *is* much more detailed,
complete, and is specific to your vehicle. I have all
three, and the Chiltons and Haynes appear to be
compiled largely from excerpts from the FSM. For
example, compare the diagrams.

The only value I find in the Chiltons (Haynes is not
wothe very much IMHO) is that it will describes tricks
to doing things without using special service tools.
The FSM simply says use SST #14567-2345 which is very
annoying... who actually buys those things from the
dealer??? So I think that it is worthwhile to have
both.

Have fun!

The FSM I have for an 1989 looks EXACTLY like the link
you sent...

The color is slightly differnt... but the overall look
is the same.

The FSM is VERY detailed - too much so. Many times you
DONT need to take apart half the stuff it says you
have too.
It also shows an inordiante number of very cool (but
not always necessary) Special Service Tools (SST) in
use.

Sounds like you got some kind of "generic" FSM.

Also - there is a repair book out by the BENTLY
publisher that sbasically yhe highlites of truck and
4runner FSMs. That one is sometimtes easier to get. It
has many "offical" (still tagged with cryptic toyota
numberiings) FSM drawings.

As far as the injectors... send em off to RC Engineering...

I used to be on a list for the Talon/Eclipse, and there was always a lot
of talk of making non-turbo cars in to turbo cars. The end conclusion
was that it was *always* easier to sell the non-turbo and buy a turbo car.
This sounds like a similar project. Unless you have a particular
attachment to your 93, or significant upgrades in it already, you might
consider that as an option. Then again, who am I to talk, as the guy who
has done some of the more hairbrained upgrades which have actually
devalued my cars. ;-)

On another note, I also owned a 93 V6 4runner. I had the 5spd, and even
that I found to be very sluggish. I'm sure there were upgrades I could
have done, but I sold it and went back to my 88 4cyl, which was faster.
It might be that even after putting in the 5spd, you may still find it
sluggish. Perhaps others on the list have other suggestions for sluggish
V6's.

Mark,
I have an R150 5-speed tranny that I removed from my '92 4Runner.
It needs to be rebuilt, but the transfer case is still in great condition.
The only problem with the transmission, is 2nd gear synchros are worn.
It could be rebuilt. I also have the bell housing for it. It was removed from a
V-6.
As far as the front IFS auto hubs will work fine.
I am not sure if you will have to cut a hole in the floorboard, for the shifter.

Where are you located?
I am in North Texas (Dallas Area). Just make an offer on the parts.
Happy wrenching!

I've found this company which is less than half the price and seems to be
just as good:

Any thoughts?
