TOY: Re: Synthetic Oil and Oil Treatments (Slick 50/Prolong)
Whether or not to use synthetic oil in engines during break in periods
depends on oil types.
There are about 3 different types of synthetic oils on the market. They
behave differently and this leads to some confusion about which is which and
whether they are compatible or not with regular dino oil or each other.
1. Synthetic polyolefin -- just means synthetic mineral (motor) oil. the
majority of synthetics are just this. They are compatible with regular dino
oil, because they are just a man-made version of dino oil -- just more
clean. Amsoil, moblil 1, castrol synthetic, qstate synthetic. These can be
used sometimes depending on manufacturer recommendations for breaking in an
engine.
2. Poly-glycol synthetic -- Usually used as synthetic air compressor lube.
Not compatible with mineral oils. they make a mess when they degrade with
eachother. Sometimes this stuff behaves weird in engines.
3. Poly-ester synthetic -- this is what Redline is. Long lasting, but not
compatible with regular mineral (motor) oil. Apparently it bonds to the
steel somehow and that is what makes it so wear resistant. It also makes it
really bad for motor break-in periods -- the motor just won't break in using
this stuff.
Additives -- do a search in the news about those popular oil additives.
Many of them actually will damage your engine. Almost every one of those
companies has been in huge lawsuits about their products eating engines.
Hope this helps a little.
