Re: TOY: Synthetic Oil and Oil Treatments (Slick 50/Prolong)
The synthetic oil issue has been beaten to death here, and right now I
still use the dino stuff. I don't know much about the synthetics, but
here's a little tip on getting the best dino oil:
When shopping for a good dino oil, look at the back of the bottle for the
API service rating. It should be somewhere towards the bottom in a little
circle. You should look for 3 things. The top arch of the circle shows the
actual rating, and should say something like "API service rating SJ." The S
means it's for a gasoline engine ("C" would be diesel), and the J is
quality-A being the lowest, and right now, I believe the best is at L. In
the middle of the circle, it will say the viscosity of the oil ("10w-30" or
whatever). And the bottom will say one of 2 things. Actually, either 1
thing or nothing. It should say "Energy Conserving."
Right now, I'm using Valvoline 10w-30. It had a higher service rating
than anything else I could find-SL. It is also shown as Energy Conserving.
I hope this can help some of the other dino buyers out there.
